I couldn't agree more. Why do they even close it? Do they think Fender enthusiasts will stay up late and ruin the boards...?

Forums run by Guitar Makers often go a wry and fail. This forum is still pretty new and Fender is being cautious as their reputation is on the line here. It will eventually open more.

Be patient and glad that we have it.

To be fair, you've seen forums like Gearwire and such full of 11 year olds posting nothing but 4-letter words and flames. Fender can't afford to allow that to happen here on their turf. You would think they could afford to hire a few extra moderators to expand the hours though.

As long as it doesn't turn into the FDP Forum where they witch hunt 24/7 for transgressors according to some bizarro OCD set of arbitrary rules like the Soup Nazi.

Fender has established a very reasonable set of guidelines here, and allows enough freedom such that an honest expression of opinion is appreciated, and not attacked out of hand. Just don't say anything derogatory about John Mayer or Shane!

Weekends are more likely a possibility soon than nights. This thread itself is actually a good demonstration of that -- it's past 11:15 p.m. on a "school night" and I'm still up responding to forum posts from the day, and this even with a 5:30 p.m. forum closure! :( Now, in fairness I did spend the day today not at work but instead on vacation, having a Tele®-induced blast in a recording studio -- but you get the idea ... I get home and have the forum's activities to get caught back up on.

"So why don't you hire more moderators?" Believe it or not, there is NO dedicated moderation staffing here. Rather, every single Fender employee that you see participating here (myself included!) is doing it largely on his/her own time, in addition to his/her normal work responsibilities.

Based on its current growth rate I do most definitely anticipate that this forum will grow to the size wherein it eventually makes solid business sense to have part- or even full-time staffing devoted specifically to the 'moderation' topic. But ... fact is we're not there yet. And truthfully, one of the reasons that the decisionmakers allowed me to explore this path this year in the first place was my reassurance that I felt we could pull it off -- at least in the short term -- without incurring any additional expense or personnel. If I now do a 180 and say, "Whoops, Decisionmakers, I was wrong ... we need to rush out and hire a group of moderators ASAP!" ... well, let's just say that in that scenario the Fender forum would probably prove to be a fairly short-lived beast.

Another question I get a lot is: "Why can't you simply recruit a bunch of us to help out?" Well, actually, you're ALL welcome and encouraged to notify me directly (at ForumAdmin AT fender.com) whenever you see folks spamming, abusing, or generally being out of line. Several of you are already doing that and it's been a huge help. As far as equipping non-FMIC staff with actual moderation controls, though ... let's just say I'm getting an image of our entire Legal team collectively fainting. :-) There are some things you just can't do on a 'corporate' forum and that'd definitely be in that list.

Far more detail than anyone cared to read on the topic, I'm sure!

The danger to a non- or poorly moderated site is what happens to many corporate chatrooms such as sports franchise forums: they get full of abuse, flames, personal battles and cusswords, and then some suit waltzes in, freaks out and simply shuts the whole thing down permanently. That happened recently to my local San Jose Sharks official site chatroom. So Brad has to walk a narrow line. I'm sure he could tell you about some very extreme posts he had to delete here already. Like about 10,000 of em.

I would say it's shortsighted of Fender not to hire mods for the room: This place is $%^&^%$# good for business! It's a marketing division's dream come true!

There have definitely been some "extreme" posts but for the most part it's actually not that bad -- this is a REALLY well behaved bunch for the most part thus far and I've truthfully not deleted more than 30 (OK, maybe 40 :-) ) posts since day one. Besides, no one wants to hang out in an environment where there are a bunch of strongarm "Big Brother" mods hanging out and editing every other sentence -- that's soooooo 1997. :-)

Good feedback as usual and we'll get there, don't worry. I'm sure you'd agree that our having a forum at all is certainly a huge step in the right direction!

Here is a giant THANKS to all of the Fender staff who have given of their time to make this a reality.

I can only say to my fellow posters who left negative remarks, some of us enjoy talking all things Fender as well as Playing.

There is a huge amount of talent and knowledge out there for those hungry to learn and a Fender run forum was much in need.

the other forum out there is run by bullies who kill your threads for getting off topic, you know like switching from Strats to which Fender amp you like to play with your Strat, Go figure!!!

as long as we all play nice this will be a lot of fun!

+1 on these comments. Fender builds products for enthusiasts. The more opportunity enthusiasts have to interact about their shared "obsession", the more involved they become----and the more Fender products they will buy! It's very easy for the end users of such products to forget that the reason a company does things is to ultmately increase revenues. Nothing at all wrong with that, but we as end users and Fender as the manufacturer, need to realize that often things get done or not done for reasons that don't make a lot of sense to the other group. Not a big deal, but just another reason that forums like this can benefit both groups if managed well. Better communication. Individuals like to make a decision and implement it NOW. Corporations tend to move much slower---hasty desicions can result in long term pain.
We'll eventually see an expansion of available time. We just need to encourage Fender and be patient. Thanks, Brad (and other employees) for seeing the advantages and being willing to invest the time!
