OK now the screw is about a half of an inch long but it screws in only for an eight of an inch. What you could do right now is to carefully remove the screw on the next tuning key and try to screw it gently in the defective tuning key and if it works, screw the defective screw in the second tuning key (the good one) and see what happens. If both screws hold fine then you're in business but if the defective screw doesn't screw in the good tuning key or if the defective tuning key doesn't hold the good screw, then you're in for a new set of tuners. Good luck LVA hope this helps. :)

You go Claude. Sounds like her screw is stripped. May need a new tunner? This one is all yours Claude.

THanks claude.

It screws in without the washer but with the washer it won't screw in.

Unscrew the second tuning key and compare both screws or better, try to swap both screws. If both screws are OK when screwed on the good tuning key, then it might be the inside of the defective tuning key that is worn and needs replacement.

Claude, you are seriously the man. Not a lot of people would go out of their way to take and upload a good detailed picture, and then entirely walk someone through the problem.

That's good karma sir.

Thanks claude. :D

I'm just going to take it in. I'm afraid of undoing another screw. It's weird. I can screw it in without the washer but not with it. I guess I'm a weakling. I'll just have to suck it up and go to that store with the $@!&#*% manager. I"m never ever trying to change my own strings again. ever. I feel like a moron and a half.

LVA, don't beat yourself up for nothing. You didn't mess up, in fact you did the right thing to submit your problem to the forum, it was the screw that was overtightened on some previous maintenance or assembly job. Continue to change your strings, learn a thing or two in the progress, that is how we all live and learn, hey, you might be the one helping someone in the future. Keep us posted on your guitar work. :)

Thanks Claude. You're very very sweet. It just looks so easy for everyone else and I always seem to have bad luck with stuff. I figured someone here would know what was going on with it. It was a bit late at night for me and dad's real sick again so I was real crabby. Thanks again. You're all sweehearts.

Claude,
excellant advice all around.

LVA,
don't beat yourself up, excellant question and learning lesson. Keep changing your own strings if you feel comfortable. Thanks for you question, it helps us all to learn.
