The nut between the neck and the head or the nut that holds the tuning peg on the head? Do you have more details please, or maybe a pic?

LVA,

That's vague information. A pic would help. For most guitarists a nut is the piece between the headstock and the 1st fret. I hope that is not the nut you are talking about.

You'll need a wrench or a screwdriver, do you have some tools?

Are you talking about the mounting bolt holding the tuner on the neck? or did you lose the screw on the tuning key and the tuning key is off? Or, are you saying the piece the key is mounted to is out of the housing?

If it is the first one, tighten the bolt back down. Make it snug, but do not overtighten.

If it is the tuning key, put it back on and scew in the screw. Don't over tighten. If it is really hard to turn...lossen the screw just a bit until it fells like the rest.

If it is the 3rd scenerio, have you thought of purchacing a new set of tuners? I recommend locking tuners if you have to spend money. You may need to have professional help installing them if they are not a direct fit for your guitar.

I don't know how to describe the damn thing anymore. It's on the low E key at the top of the tuning peg. it's a phillips screw at the top of the tuning peg head. The damn thing won't screw in at all. it keeps going round and round

No, it's above that. The thing that turns to tune the string. The top screw fell off.
