That post concerning 1978 is interesting. (Please don't hold it against me - I love my '92 Fat Strat), But when I turned 14 in 1979 my folks bought me the sweetest used guitar in the world: a goldtop Les Paul Deluxe with "baby" humbuckers. They told us the guitar was 4 years old at the time, making it, I suppose a '74 or '75.

Oh my goodness, that was the best playing guitar I've ever touched. It was truly a "fretless wonder".

But, back to the original subject, I can't say I've played a late model LP
that I've been very impressed with.

People who make blanket statements about Gibson, really need to try them in person. Gibson has guitars from $499 on up just as Fender does. I agree there is no need for $7,000 LP's, but there's no need for $4,000 or $25,000 Bolt together Fenders either just because they have the words "Custom Shop" or signature stamped on them either. Not that I wouldn't mind having one. :D Most big brands have a high end series. Look at the Adrian Belew Signature Fly at $9,000. The list goes on and on. People really take brand recognition and snobbery too far as well as the "Sour Grape Syndrome". If you want something and can't afford it, it doesn't make it overpriced or bad. People make things up just to justify their inability to afford something. I just accept the fact that I can't afford or even justify buying a guitar that expensive without designing it myself. I have lots of cheap affordable guitars that sound great to me. I don't care one bit about status symbols. I have some serious oddballs.
Well stated 63S

my luthier had a 75 LP Goldtop in house a few weeks ago with the mini humbuckers and it was badass...your parents definitely got you a gem of a guitar!

Yeah, the pick-ups were chrome covered and had a really unique sound. I haven't seen that combination very often. It seems like the mini- humbuckers you see now are plastic covered. To me, it was a fairly unique guitar.

But you know, back then, good LP's were sort of a dime a dozen.

Unfortunately, I let the guitar get away from me a few years later.
But it helped start my own humble "glory days".

Unless you are way hung up on what your guitar says on the headstock, completely ignore Gibson and buy an Epiphone. The prices are way more reasonable and the quality is better.

The Epi version looks like a Les Paul
it feels like a Les Paul
it sounds like a Les Paul
it costs significantly less than a Gibson Les Paul

Sounds like a better value all around to me

Quality control at Gibson has been lax the past few years and that goes hand in hand with employee dissatisfaction with management and work conditions.A recent survey by a corporate research firm deemed Gibson as having one of the worst employee morale problems in the U.S. I have found that older Gibsons and newer Epiphone equivalents to be of much better quality.

I'd really like to see that survey. I can name 10 companies just in my area where morale is so low it's surprising the companies are still in business. I don't think the Gibson employees are working for minimum wage with no benifits. I think they are worried about Gibson's lack of financial health.

I don't find Gibsons QC any better or worse than Fenders to be honest. Some of the Gretsch stuff is just embarrassing IMO. Martin Guitar is pretty low on the morale scale too because of the recent move of the HPL guitar line to Mexico and the sneaky way Martin went about doing it..
Not to mention all the financial and EPA woes of Gibson, Fender and other guitar manufacturers. Don't forget that Gibson does not manufacturer their guitars outside the US.

 This is quite opinionated, do you own both an epi and a Gibson lp?

'Bought a Gibspn SG Faded a couple years ago. Added chrome pup covers, good knobs, truss rod cover, got a hot pro setup.

It is a truly splendid, eminently playable and toneful guitar.

The Epi's are nice. I have played this one. http://www.epiphone.com/news.asp?NewsID=1632 for $800 it's a a grand less and a no brainer.

The difference in tone and quality between the Gibby LP Standard and the Epi is almost non existent. The Epi has Gibson USA Classic 57 pups, Mallory Caps and a Switchcraft swithch, jack etc. I played them side by side and was seriously impressed. You won't get a Plek setup on the Epi, but I survived 40+ years of playing without a Plek setup.

I bought an Epi Les Paul 2 years ago after playing multiple Epi's and Gibby's side by side at Guitar Center. For the price difference I couldn't justify buying the Gibson when the quality of the guitars was so close as to be a non issue. Yes the Gibson pickups were a bit hotter, but I change out the pickups on my guitars anyway so that wasn't a consideration.

A plek'd epi might not be a bad idear, but not a plek done by gibson, I guess that's part of this thread... But it's a whole different ball game!

Hi 63 Supro,I can't remember the company that did the research but I remember that some months ago I posted the web address of the company so people could see the results for themselves. They interviewed Gibson Employees past and present even executives and the concensus of of opinion was since Henry J. Jusziewicz took control of Gibson both morale and quality control had fallen off considerably.I'll try to look up my previous posts to find the link again.

Capitalism is good, but any time that the pursuit of increased Corporate profit takes precedence over making a quality product you've left the path of reason and success.

I've looked through my older posts with hopes of finding the company name of the survey to no avail, maybe the name will appear to me again in an epiphany.
