The quality of Gibson's has been in question for a few years now. The Studio's in my opinion have always been sub-standard for the price.
When I got my 2001 Standard (I got it used a few years after that) I changed out the tuners and the wiring harness.
It's pretty bad when you pay that much for a guitar and have to replace parts to make it right.

It is rumoured, that the evil empire is known to sell factory seconds. However, we all know how unsubstantiated claims are! I thought items that were seconds always had a mark of some kind, stating the fact. I have seen those, i wonder if it is something that is required by law? And as far as gibson goes, i am disgusted with the way over the top high prices of a lot of their guitars.

Out of 10, 4. I haven't gotaa gibson, but I've gota epiphone SG, and its all good except, the tone and volume, are in the wrong postion; when its on 10, is says 0. I'm sure gibsons standards are almost the same.

I've been trying to buy one since Nov 09. I must have played in excess of 30 LP's in that time. Every one of them has beeh highly decorated but very snooze worthy to say the least. I certianly see no justification of their price, or Gibsons claim to be a premier builder.

Chet the Studio's are the only ones I'd consider now, after I found the constant neck binding issue. They don't make them in any colours I like though. I don't see how the price rose £400 on them either. You could pick em up for £600 a few years back. Their £1K now, when compared to a American Deluxe of around the same street price, their sadly subpar.

Frankly all talk of Gibson guitars being more labour intensive to assemble is nonsense. The neck joints are ropey, they use a 1x1" wedge shim to angle the neck, rather than cut the tennon to the correct angle. Which also negates the better neck to body contact fallacy too. All the bodies and necks are machine cut, the necks are machine fretted, something Fender refuse to do, despite higher turnout. I wonder why? (rhetorical question) The extra day or two for glue to dry (whilst the body, neck and headstock are clamped and not worked on) is a nothing timescale on a guitar that takes what 3 weeks do build and paint dry enough to leave the factory.

The suprising fact I've found is that their Epiphone lines are far better built in all bar finish and hardware (spec'd from head office in Nashville or Memphis). Atleast with them you get a strong headstock and a properly angled tennon thats not shimmed.

Nikininja

All of the Studio's I ever checked out need fret work. The ends in particular.

Here we go again. Like Fender guitars and amps are all perfect. Gibson always marked their seconds with either a "2" or the word second on them. As far as Studio's go, I could never bond with them. I rather have a LP JR. Something about the Gibby P90's that I really love.

I've played good Gibsons and bad ones, but I liked most. There was a Les Paul Classic that I played at Guitar Center about two or three years ago and it's still one of the best guitars I've ever played. I went crazy trying to get $2000 for it, but it sold within the week and I would have had to save up for it for years.

I bought a Les Paul BFG about two years ago. I wanted a Les Paul very badly, and yes I admit that the fact it said Gibson on the headstock was a factor. It cost me $700 (it was $1300 new) and I bought it from a guy off a forum. It's the only guitar I've ever bought online and I was a little concerned about it having not played it first. And I was concerned about the quality too, since I hear so many bad things about new Gibsons. It's also the most expensive guitar I've ever bought, and it was my main guitar along with my Peavey amp before Stevie spoiled everything for me. The verdict, after playing it for these past years it's one of the best Gibsons I've ever played. The neck is a little thinner than most '50s necks and thicker than most '60s necks and it feels great. I still like my Squier and Fender Strats better, but there's nothing wrong with my Les Paul either.

I own a 2004 LP Stnd.
1-10

Looks -9 The Ice Tea Burst top is beautiful, but you can see the seam where the top and body do not match up right.

Sound- 9 It's a great sounding guitar, but to me a little limited. I prefer the versatility of my Strats.

Parts- 7 This is my biggest gripe. The material Gibson uses for nut is terrible. I prefer bone. One of the screws on one of the tuning keys is stripped. I found this out well after I purchased the guitar.

Over All- 8 Don't regret getting this guitar. I bought it from the Gibson retail store in Nashville (the guy gave me a great deal). The guitar has trouble staying in tune. The lead guitarist in my last band has more hours on it than I do.

When I return from Iraq, I will be selling both of my Gibsons. I'm trying to get the money to buy a Custom Shop Strat.
By the way I would look into getting guitar appraised and then selling it to a private buyer. Don’t trade it in for anything. You’ll never get your money’s worth.

I've seen Gibsons and Fenders new out of the case at a Sam Ash, before the mindless morons got their hands on the floor units. They looked great. Not all, but enough show no respect for the instrument they will handle.

I surely wouldn't trade a 34 Martin for a LP. But then again Gibson doesn't currently make ANY guitar that appeals to me. Vintage Gibbys yes, but post 1978 no thanks.

I have an Epi Elitist LP and I chose it over a new Gibson Studio. It looked and sounded better and was a little less money, but now I am back to my Fender roots.

I don't think it's a matter of whether or not Gibsons are any worse in quality consistency than Fenders, but for the fact that they cost on average twice as much, their quality control should be twice as good as what it is. Not bad guitars, but for what they cost, they should be consistently better than what they are.
