I was thinking of getting a Fender amp like this one. I just want a basic one without all the bells and whistles. I liked the Peavey vypyr, but there were too many buttons for my taste.

This is the amp I was looking at.

I heard that you can replace the speaker for a better sound with this one.

Is this a hard thing to do? I'm just curious. I'm not going to run out and get this stuff, but I was just curious if anyone has ever done this before. Thanks.

I hate to say this but why not go for a Vibro Champ XD. It will sound better than the FM25 and is simple to operate. Putting a $65 speaker into a $99 amp makes no sense to me. You may like the way it sounds right off the bat. Tone is very subjective. Just because someone says you need to change this or that doesn't really mean there is anything wrong with the amp in stock form. Only your ears and playing style can dictate that.
Remember, just because an amp has a lot of knobs doesn't mean it's difficult to operate. Don't ever be intimated by the number of knobs an amp has.

I change speakers in my amps but they're vintage...in a new amp I would put alot of time into playing it and then if you still think it could benefit from a speaker change,go for it.Most guitarists think they're stuck with the sound of an amp,but a speaker is an easy thing to change with the knowledge and it does make a difference.
But I wouldn't do it unless I really liked the amp and was going to stick with it for a long time.

Yeah, I was thinking that too, I was just considering her budget. Seems like it's under $200. The Vibro Champs will still probably be louder and sound better than the FM25. The ultimate would be the DRRI, but that seems way out of her price range.
LadyVendettaAngel, you really need to go out and try a bunch of amps. Bring a friend for moral support if you're nervous.

Those are good points that you made...there's not much sense in putting a speaker in an amp that doesn't cost much more than the speaker....not that it won't sound good but it is wiser to put the money in the whole package to begin with.

I tend to leave my amps as I buy them. I have always been able to get the sound I want from them. That said, I tend to be rather gentle on my equipment compared to alot of folks I play with.

I changed the speaker in my Hot Rod Deluxe. It wasn't hard and it took about an hour. You have to think about what has to be done to get the old speaker out and the new one in. For example you, may have to remove the chasis and therefore you need to discharge the caps so you don't accidently kill yourself. Just take your time and don't rush, but most of all think before you act.

You just like that amp "cause it's so cute in red! C'mon, tell the truth.

The Superchamp XD is what I have and it sounds great with the factory speaker. I highly recomend it! (You could always paint it red if you want to.)

Don't be afraid of the Vypyr, it is actually very easy to use and can get a great variety of sounds. I know I just bought one for my 12 year old son, and he had it all figured out within minutes. We were looking at the $200 Vibochamp XD, because I am a tube buff. Guess what?...the Vypyr 15 sounded better to me and cost half the $$$. It basically gives you almost every distortion, effect and amp voice you would ever need sitting in your bedroom. I was impressed. Much better low end chunk than the Vibrochamp. The Vibrochamp is about marketing the tube amp section, but unfortunately, the pre-amp on a practice amp is the most important part since you can't really crank the power section 99% of the time you are practicing anyway. There is not a poweramp section in the world that will sound like a cranked 6l6 section at talk level volumes. You will not be disapoointed with the Vypyr...I wish we had amps like this when I was younger.

Oh and yes, I have swaped speakers on old amps with great results, but in buying a new amp, make sure it sounds good to you before you buy, so you wont need to do this. You spend big $$ to get marginal improvements in tone IMHO

Thanks. I am working on a budget of 200 approx right now. I'm looking for something a little louder right now (somewhere in a 30W range perhaps) and maybe some effects on it just to screw around with for experimentation. Also, I'm looking for brands I can trust for durability and customer service if possible.

I just read a lot of reviews about people taking that one fender amp and switching out the speaker. I thought that was weird, but just wanted some opinions (didn't know if that was a common thing to do or not). Not big on the red color though. It looks like a sick tomato barfed up a lung. lol Skulls and crossbones....there's a combo. LOL

Short story long...looking for a louder amp (30W maybe) with some effects to play with. I'm working with a $200 range (saving money or trying to which is hard with dad being sick).

The Vypyr 30 is under $200 and should be considered/played. In addition to having more power, it also adds several stopbox effects.

By all means, play as many amps in your price range and find the one that speaks the best to you. Also, don't rule out a well maintained used amp, you will get even more for your money
