I saw something on tv last night where they were taking Stradivarius instruments and doing something that looked like MRI or some kind of medical scans to measure and detail every thing inside and out to try to figure out why the tone was so special. :?

They did the same thing to Brian Setzer's 6120 when designing his new hot rod models.

I hope that this does not come across as cheeky, but I don't mod my instruments. I tend to be of the school of thought that they were built the way they are to sound that way. If I am looking fo a different sound then heck, why not just get a custom made one from the start. I am not in judgement of anyone who does mod their gear, to each his own. I just think that Fender got it right the first time..:)

I'm not seeing much wisdom here, troop.

That issue M-9 pistol or M-4 carbine you're carrying -- are you absolutely convinced there aren't available mods that would render these weapons better tools for the job? How about body armor. Natick doesn't always "get it right". That's how the new "Interceptor" came to be. By your own logic, you'd still be jumping a T-10. Ready for that?

Just something to think about on a philosophical level when the subject of "mods" comes up.

Arjay

Well Arjay,
LOL I understand your point of view..:) BUT...the new T-11 is not all that great. You are at the mercy of the winds...you can't steer it and descent rate is slower... I like being on the ground faster...LOL The M-9 is junk never should have gone away from the 1911...better knock down power the M4 has the rail system on it so...I'll give you that one. I just think that alot of folks mod without realizing that the amp is a crucial part of the process and they fail to take that into account. I am lucky in that I have the tone I have always wanted without having to mod. Does it mean modding is wrong...nope...does it mean I am right....nope. I just got lucky..:)

If you ever saw what all was shoe-horned into my deployment bag, you'd know I would've killed to decrease my descent rate.

Batteries, claymores, two basic loads and a spare barrel for our pig, smoke, frags, CS, extra water......it's no wonder I'm ready for new knees now.

How many jumps you logged so far, ABS?

Arjay

Well if you were an NCO I'd tell you to sign up for the jumpmaster/loadmaster course so you could qualify for your "master blaster" wings. But you'll prolly get them in due course anyway once you hit 75. I got 55 myself -- mostly Herks but I've jumped choppers and -141s as well.

Most of them have the label. This is a real label, and most will look something like this:

Some copies reproduce the label and then add a country of origin mark below it. Some will misspell a word but replicate the label.

My label is from the latter period of his life, which is a good indication of a copy since most copy labels are from around that time period. If you had a label in the 1600's then you might be on to something.

Hi again Nevin: in fact, my dad's violin doesn't have a Strad label inside. It has a small A.S. Strad marking on the back (for "Antonio Stradivarius"), like this:

Image

As I say, it was made in the 1790s, a century after Mr Stradivarius lived, so nobody's mistaking it for the real thing. I have no idea what the replica market was like in those days so I couldn't say whether its maker thought of it as a copy, a fake, or just his "Stradivarius model".

Curiouser and curiouser: the violin actually does have a label inside, which someone must have put in there at some later point in its history. The label says... Guarnerius! Somebody obviously thought; "If folks don't believe it's one thing perhaps they'll believe it's the other..."

Kinda like putting a fake Gibson logo on that Tokai Springysound! D'oh!

Whatever: I've been listening to it all my life and it's quite a nice violin in its own right. :)

Cheers - C
