South Korea looks like a damn good side

They were playing S. Korea...

what do you mean? S Korea always has a very solid team. Maybe I didn't understand your comment.

I meant Greece. I changed it in my post.

I got ya, Greece isn't really a bad team, they just have trouble in the World Cup for whatever reason. Any team that makes it out of Europe is class, but they can't seem to buy a goal

I am going to watch as much as I can. As of now I think that either Germany or Spain are going to take it, or maybe Argentina they are looking good. I think that England, in spite of the great team they have now (why isn't Joe Hart playing in the goal), are going to choke on it (sadly like always since 1966).

I really hate the French team right now. I just don't think they deserve to be there. They played horribly in the qualifying rounds and if it wouldn't for Thierry Handy... sorry Henry... no I am sticking on Handy :D France wouldn't be in South Africa now. IMHO Ireland deserves to be there.

ARRIBA ESPANA! I have been rooting for them for several years now since Peru can't ever make it to the World Cup anymore and because I am a huge fan of Torres. I too was surpirsed at how well Argentina played in their first match even if they were only playing Nigeria. You have to think that Messi is going to turn in some goals after serving up 8 shots yesterday with nothing to show for them.

I tried to root for France yesterday because I am a big fan of Sagna, but I just can't do it. I'd like to see Mexico and Uruguay come out of that group. Uruguay has a very good team and I think this year the Mexicans will impress.

And yes if I could change the rules to soccer/football in an international level, NO TIES. Then it would be worth watching. Until there is a winner or enough people collapse from exhaustion that that team has to forfiet, either way a definative winner would prevail.

Hi RK: do me a favor, please. Never, never watch a cricket international. That's a game that goes on seven hours a day for five days in a row and sometimes for the last two or three of those everyone knows it's headed for a draw. A series is the same two teams playing from three to six matches and it takes all summer. And if Australia are playing you are pretty sure before any of it even begins who is going to win!

That sport is definitely not for you!!!

Thanks Ceri. Now I will never have to watch a cricket match in my life :D .

I have to say though, and lot of you Americans might hate me after this, but I think that (World) football is more exciting than American football (where they use their hands more than their feets) . I mean when an 80 minute match extends to because they are setting up or re-setting up or a coach is callenging the referee call I am sorry but that is just bull. At least in football the referees call is final and thats it. Whether it be "hand of god", Thierry "Handy" or Drogba practicing for Olympics diving and eating grass, it all thanks to referees call. All you can do about is cry about in media  :D

The Aussies got STOMPED. I didn't expect them to win the match but I didn't think it would be that embarrassing.

Sorry folks, I do not like Soccer/Football. Then again I do not like most sports, except basket ball. There are just more points per game and no ties.

To be honest, that's one of the reasons I don't enjoy basketball. I like how you get occasional goals in soccer, so it adds to the suspense of the game. That's just my opinion. :|

And most of all, no ties!!! There has to be a winner in a game, otherwise what is the point of the game?

Imagine if you will, you just watched a soccer game and there was no score or 1 to 1. Instead of a tie, you put another 10 minutes on the clock. What, still no winner, another 10 minutes. Eventually someone will break the tie and win.

Nah, doesn't work like that.

And what if after the first "extra 10 min" there's still no goal, should we keep adding extra-times forever?? This will only over-fatigate the players (what can lead to injuries) and the fans. Having ties is part of the game, and in the end, only one team wins the championship anyway. Many times, a tie is like a victory to a team, and a loss to another - that depends on the number of total points the teams scored (a victory is worth 3 points in the scorecard, a tie 1 point, and nothing if you lost), number of goals scored in the matches and other factors.

My bet for finalists:
Brazil  (the "Seleção" plays on Tuesday!), Italy, Germany (as usual, the teams with big legacies  )

USA may go to the second-phase, let's see...
I'm curious about Holand and Spain (though I think Spain is so overrated...)

Isn't that also a test of an athlete...endurance. I say may the best team win. But like I stated I do not like the game because the potiential for a stalemate.

Like Ceri pointed, a match could be stretched for hours.. waiting the athletes to collapse sounds really.. dumb, with all the respect. Scoring in a "soccer" match is not as easy as scoring in basketball or US "eggball" game  But don't worry, they have the extra times and penalties in the second phase, so no ties  .

Germany did well as always. Not impressed at all with Argentina, poor poor game. Good individual talents but no unit. Messi doesn't play as well in the national team as in Barcelona and everyone knows that. I doubt they will go very far. In 3 hours, Italy! 8)

I was driving the other day and had the U.S. vs. England match on but after ten minutes I had to change the station, the constant drone of the horns was just to much coming from the six speakers in my truck. Could not enjoy because that noise.

Godhelpus, what an awful noise!

So far, they're saying there is no question of a ban on the vuvuzela.

Let us not make this a South Africa instrument alone. A vuvuzela is now an international instrument. People buy them and stuff them in their suitcase to go home.

Ceri, I was driving to a Tree nursery to buy a Serviceberry tree to put out back and figured I would listen to the match on the hour ride. With that noise there was no way to enjoy it on the radio.

Drove me flippin' insane watching the TV, so I turned down and put on some nice music while they played. Much better!

BTW: just Googled it - that's a very pretty tree. In flower round about now, I'm guessing? Over this side we have something called a Service Tree. Also nice - but completely different...

And they do blow them the whole game, non stop, like I said earlier in this thread, it's like a hideous torture, these things have got to be banned.
Surely the whole world is complaining. I'm having to watch the games with the sound turned off.
Ridiculous!!
