If I can gather, in Italy during the early 80's they used to limit foreigners to 2 or 3 per team.

next bets:

Japan and Spain advance.

Quarter - Finals:
Uruguay, Germany and Brazil advance.

So. Been away for a couple of days - what did I miss?

Well what a utter farce the England side are. Talentless, lacklustre, uninterested, unthinking, witless, just doing it for the money, nothings... The only chance we have is to ditch the entire team...

Yup.

...Gents, my grannie was quite good at football. OK, she died in 2004 at the age of 90 - but at this stage I don't think any of that should necessarily count against her. She's available for selection for the national side if it would help - and I think it might!

Sorry to my English mates here but I have to say we all had quite a titter at England getting gubbed. Not because we are anti-English, just because the media ram it down our throats that Englands gonna win from the minute they qualify. Its nice not to be hearing that every 5 mins. It is true that if Scotland beat Germany 10-0 and England drew 0-0 with Belgium it would be England makin all the headlines simply because IMHO England has the best league in the world and it gets sore for us Scots

It would be nice to see Scotland, England, Wales, Northern Ireland and The Republic of Ireland all qualify for something at the same time.

I cant say that foreigners are poluting the game in a player sense. As a Scotsman the only chance we have of a good national team is if our players are playing for Celtic, Rangers, in England or overseas.

I am firmly against foreign managers of national teams though. I think if a team represents a nation it should include all, not just playing staff.

Better luck next time guys!

I see what you mean and in a lot of ways agree with you. I for one would be happier with a UK side. Look at all the great players we've lost at international level just by being divided. When the likes of Giggs have to play for Wales, who dont really have a chance, it's a waste.

Better to combine all four small countries into one side. After all, the tax money is spent in all four. Better united than divided, we'd stand more of a chance.

Along with Giggsy, one of the greatest players ever George Best never played in a world cup

100% with you on a UK side Nick. England think they are better than they are, Scotland, well we know we are pish but our spirit is there and then Wales and NI don't stand a chance in hell. Its criminal that Giggs and Besty never got there.

See the stars of all 4 nations could shine, we'd be undefeatable.

It won't happen, FIFA haven't forgiven us for the crowd violence of the 80's.

It's not impossible or at all far fetched to consider a UK team, what you have to do first of all is forget the premiere league. They have become more powerful than the FA and the way things are is 'just right' for the clubs and companies running that.
What you do is employ a UK management team, select a squad of UK players from the three lower divisions and you can then give this team a trial run at the next Olympic games, given the right amount of practice and friendly games to get them prepared.
Most, if not all of the teams in this world cup, will be entering teams in the next olympics, maybe even using the same players as it is now a professional event.
So, we see how they go on and if it goes well, use that as our national team.
Haha, I wonder if that would happen? What do you think?
Could be a cool idea and we leave all the over-paid, spoilt brats to do what the hell they want, in their premiere league.

Er, I think that's called "Rugby", isn't it?

For that matter, a UK side - that's rugby as well sometimes, no?

Hated rugby as a kid. All those goose-pimply male legs you're meant to be grabbing. Ew!

Though in the third year at high school they did let the non-sporty boys and the non-sporty girls play rugby together. Now that was a game for MEN! :D

Ah, what a winter that was... [Happy, far away smile on face]

Cheers - C

Always detested Rugby to be honest but I'd watch a female (good looking of course) game any day of the week!

Yes, congrats to Spain but I've found Portugal a bit of a let down in their last couple of games. I thought they could have given it more.
Paraguay through as well, some interesting games coming now.

Portugal's D has always seemed soft to me, not to mention they dont really have an upfront striker that i would call world class for Ronaldo to play off of.

Hated to see Japan lose as I think they played a much better game aside from back luck on the PK's

So we have

Netherlands v Brasil
Ghana v Uruguay

Argentina v Germany
Paraguay v Spain

WHO YA GOT!

I'll take Netherlands in the upset, I think they have quietly been the #2-3 team in the entire Cup thusfar

Uruguay since Ghana's top 2 are hurt

Germany in a battle with Argentina

ESPANA!
