Does the brand matter? I just want to learn how to change strings so I was thinking of getting some cheaper strings to practice changing them on my own.

I have some musician's gear I got for free. I have some Ernie Ball ones as well.

I have some Peavey strings I got on clearance. I haven't been able to find those online.

I was thinking of stocking up on these just for the heck of it. They're Jimi Hendrix type of stings I guess.

So, short story long.....what brand would you recommend or does it matter? Thanks.

Thanks. I don't change gauges. I just use the 9s. That's what the specs say so I stick with that.

Oh I didn't know there were different types of 9s. I need 9-42. The Jimi ones are 38. Thanks for the gauge heads up.

+1000000000

I almost made a huge mistake.

Ernie Ball slinky pinks are my faves. They really changed the sound of my amp and keep their ring longer than other brands I've used. I always play with clean hands to keep the strings fresher longer.

I have some Ernie ones so I'll give those a whirl. I might practice changing strings with the musician's gear ones so I won't feel bad if they break.

I found the Musician's Gear strings to be lousy. I got what I paid for.

i honestly wouldnt go changing strings "just cause".
thats a waste of time and gear.
if you play your guitar on the regular, you will go
through strings often enough.

I personally have never found that the brand mattered, just the guage of the string. But I am curious, you say you want to get practice changing strings-Why have you never changed your own strings before? It is not anything I have ever known a person to have trouble with. Basically a very straight forward, cut and dry proceedure that is thoroughly outlined in numberous places on the web and I am sure comes in the instructions or is available here to look at.

The biggest problem I have is when I change strings on any of my stringed instruments, my cats are sitting there waiting to snatch any string or string part that falls to the floor  , and for the life of me I can't figure it out-why strings? They will chase them and drag them all over the darn floor till I catch up to em and take their "prize" away from them. Then they are in the trash to fish it right back out.

E/B's for me usually , but i'm trying out the anti rust elixer strings to see how long they last , they are twice the price of the eb's but are meant to last much much longer , i have them on my 2 epi's so we'll see how they go , if i get a few months out of them on the sg i'll be swapping over to them for good :)

Thanks. To answer some questions...no I have never changed strings before so I'm nervous about it. I play a lot more often now so I need to change strings more frequently I think. I play for about 30-60 min every day now whether it's practicing or trying to learn a song. I'm guessing that a person should change strings about once a month or two? ( I haven't changed mine since I got it set up last year).

Thanks for the suggestions. I have to youtube how to change strings on a Fender Squier SE now. I looked at it before and it looks pretty cut and dry, but I have nervous hands.

I used to use Dean Markley 9's on my Strat. Then I tried a set of Fender 9's and it made a big difference in the tone and the brilliance of the Strat. I hear that they are going to quit making Fender strings tho-is that true?
