Oooh - haven't seen that. Interesting, thanks.

Like Alan says, the price of importing across the Atlantic kind of cancels out half the point of DIY.

Cheers - C

EDIT: Actually, does this advert mention a website, by any chance, please...?

No worries Mr C,

For e-mail details contact: carole_molloy@ipcmedia.com

You might want to check out the lastest issue (the one with a white les paul jnr on the front) as they have a four page article on how to build Clone Pedal Kits.

Hope this helps

Andy

How about starting a pedal build thread. Photos, cats, adult beverages, tips on soldering techniques, occasional misfires and clever repairs. It might inspire others to build their own.

HA! Just saw that!

Looking forward to this. Game on Vinnyg!

Edit: Oooh I say paint it Purple (or White so it shows up on a dark stage)

Hey Ya'll...

Sorry I'm a bit late getting in on this but this is something I've thought about a few times over the years. I've thumbed thru a book called "Electronic Projects for Musicians" by Craig Anderton but I just never got around to doing anything about it. But a kit...that would be a really great place to start. I just took a look at the BYOC website though and I got a question...anyone know of something similar that isn't quite so freakin' expensive? I just looked at their analog delay kit for example... $150 dollars...for a KIT! $120 for their flanger. For that kind of bread I could just buy brand new pedals or at the very least, something used! I was expecting these kits to be like $25 to $50...that would certainly make it worth doing it myself. Sorry...I know I'm a cheap bastard but that just seems ridiculously insane for a kit.

I think it would be fun to build a pedal or two but it's not like I'm in to "boutique" or anything...I'd just kind of like to build a delay pedal or maybe a decent little compressor or phaser or something.

Thanks,
Jim

Just a little tip for stompbox building..If you buy a cheap used toaster oven from a thrift store, and bake your enclosure right after you paint it, the paint will be far more durable. If you just spray paint it and let it dry normally, it will look like crap within a weeks worth of use. Also, dont use a toaster over you plan on ever using again.

What people get confused about is while some of BYOC kits may seem pricey, many of the pedal kits are either clones of discontinued or currently unavailable versions of a pedal. Like the British Blues Overdrive, based on the original Marshall Bluesbreaker pedal [not the currently made II version], the kit from BYOC $70...while an originial Marshall Bluesbreaker sold for $220 recently on eBay...

AND many of their kits, while possibly based on recently produced or discontinued pedals, have so many variations or mods to the circuit its based off of, that while it may be similar to something you could get already made, is not exactly like the kit. Like the Envelope Filter kit, which was originally based off the DOD 440 Envelope Filter that Radiohead made everyone want to get, but now the Envelope Filter circuit while still based on the DOD 440 has also evolved into more than just a clone of a discontinued pedal, as it features a Fixed Wah mode that you cannot get buying a discontinued DOD 440.

So while I will agree that you can get the same types of effects for less, if you are looking for something specific, modded, or discontinued, BYOC is not as pricey as they may seem initially...

Vinny, I built 2 of BBO pedals. One modded, one not. If you play a Strat or single coil pup guitars, I highly recommend the suggested mods in the instructions.

vinnyg,

what did you think of the BBO kit?
Was it worth it?
Too harsh for a strat?

Wow, sorry it took me soo long to stumble upon this thread again. But just incase you havn't done it yet, I usually crank the temp and leave it in there for half an hour. It seems to make the paint wayy more durable.

I have built pedals from kits and upgraded some with kits as well. It is fun to do, so I think you will enjoy it.

Alan, Al, Andy, Ceri.

Maplins sell strip boards. Infinitely easier to work on than circuitboards.

I built my last fuzz on one. You get great access if you want to change components. The only downside is that they take up more room. The delayed pitchshift I was going on one. It's the size of a xbox  . Maplin are great for pretty much everything else except transistors. Source them elsewhere.

Hi vinnyg!

Observing your process with the pedal build I took the liberty of adding this thread to the "build thread listing thread" (uhhh what a title I'm sorry), link below.
http://www.fender.com/community/forums/viewtopic.php?t=43152&highlight=build+thread+listing

Anyway, wish you good luck and hot joints! ;-)
