I know a few of them:

Leo Fender-Fender
Orville Gibson-Gibson
Jim Marshall-Marshall
Christian Frederick Martin-Martin
George Fullerton & Leo Fender-G&L
James B Lansing-JBL
Hartley Peavy-Peavy
Paul Reed Smith-PRS

What are some more?

Epiphone is a mixture of the founder's nickname "epi" and greek for sound "phon".

I'm sorry eccentric0

I'll email my future posts to you before I post them, just to make sure they will be interesting enough for you.

I really thought this forum was to "banter about all things music and to just jam with your fellow Lounge buddies".

I thought it was an interesting topic. I always wondered if there was a story or a person behind the name.

Ah, don't pay him no nevermind. I think it's a nice little thread.

Apropos of which, check out the origins of the company founded by Jerome Bonaparte "J.B." Squier. 8)

Ampeg amplification is one of the cooler company names. their first product was a pickup for a stand up bass, that snapped onto the foot peg, conveniently called the "Amplified Peg" or "Ampeg" for short.

Torakusu Yamaha = Yamaha.

eHow.com wrote:
Torakusu Yamaha had a lifelong fascination with instrumentation, machinery and how things worked. He was the son of an astronomer and became familiar with the instruments his father used in his work. Yamaha first studied watchmaking but changed to medical appliances and undertook repairs at a hospital. In 1887, he agreed to try to repair the reed organ at an elementary school; he not only succeeded in repairing the organ but even went onto tuning it. In 1897, he founded the Nippon Gakki Co., Ltd., the forerunner of Yamaha. In 1987, the company name was officially changed to the Yamaha Corporation to mark the company's 100th anniversary.

Huh. Never knew that.

Cheers - C
