I don't understand why people are always bashing guitar center.. I have had nothing but great service from them... The guitar manager at the Phoenix store (Wally) is a great guy to deal with... Granted I think buying used is better.. But when I do buy new from them, I know they have a no hassle return policy and would be willing to help me out if I have issues...

As far as their security... Man, get over it, they have tons of theft problems... I don't get hassled probably because I am a 41 year old clean cut white guy... But they still check out all my incoming and outgoing possessions.. Why is that such an issue with some folks ?? How would you like it if people were stealing from you ?

I agree, there is no GC real close to me but I have purchased from them before. The service was good, the deal was good, a good transaction all around.

The bag check thing is getting more common all the time, I've been through it at other stores so what's the big deal?

The only thing that's ever bothered me by a GC employee was when I was sitting on the floor in the vintage room looking inside a BF Fender amp I was going to buy...a guy came through on the way to the acoustic room, looked at me and said "don't lick your finger and stick it in there"...I said "I know what I'm doing",but later I thought as many idiots as there are out there, someone might electrocute themselves in the store....they just wouldn't have to lick their finger.

That's actually kind of funny. I think the sales guy was just acknowledging you with a lame joke. kind of an unobtrusive way to let you know he's there if you want help.

The few times I've dealt with GC it's been very positive.

I think the majority of those who have had a bad experience go in there looking for one and scrutinize every little thing they can just so they have a story to tell.

Im sure every store is worried about theft but damn, everytime I go to guitar center I feel like i'm a jail. Seems like there are more workers than customers at times. Someone at the entrance with "hello" and checking your damn bags when you purchase something and leave. Even worst is the workers constantly keeping an eye on you.

Id have to think the workers are stealing $@!& more than customers to justify management telling workers to treat its customers like this.

I have a very simple solution: If you don't like GC or how they operate their business, then just don't go there!

I've never set foot in one as i'm livin la vida broka so have to make doo with the 2 guitars i have But When i get some money... i'm going to GC by God... I want to see this fortress of solitude first hand.

I can't say I blame them for their security. If I owned a store and merchandise being taken became a problem, I'd be the same way.

Sounds like you've got some "don't watch me cuz I might wanna steal some sh*t" issues man. I've never found GC's "security" to be invasive.

Maybe it's just me, but I don't feel like they are watching me or looking over my shoulder. Then again, I'm not a scruffy looking individual or a teenager who probably can't afford to buy the stuff I'm looking at either, so that might have something to do with it.

Personally, 'never had a negative GC experience, quite the contrary, they are always excellent, in these decades of experience.

As an ex hobby store part-owner, though, it is despicable and tragic, how many people STEAL, not "shoplift," which is a stupid polite term.

Any employee of any store is free to follow this shopper around, 'cause he ain't got a guilty conscience or a Stratocaster in his pants.

Other than a crappy setup by one of their techs, which I learned my lesson and sought a REAL luthier afterwards, I haven't had any issues with buying form them. I traded my Deluxe Blackout in and surprisingly got top dollar for it, then put the cash towards my Hwy 1. The first Hwy 1 they sent me had some finish scratches in the nitro and I didn't notice them until i got home with it. I took it back and showed the manager and he sent it back and had a new one shipped immediately. So other than the terrible setup I got from their tech I've had no issues.

Most of my experiences have been good...I prefer the mom & pop stores, but I've had just as many bad experiences with them as I have with GC, or the late, lamented Mars...there are no Sam Ash stores in my area, but down in San Antonio while on vacation, I went into one, and their customer service seemed to be ok as well.

I hate to say this, but I for one am glad Guitar Center has people checking stuff at the door and has a lot of workers on the floor helping customers. I think this adds security and ensure prices do not go up due to theft. Also I like the idea my equipment gets checked at the door so my stuff does not walk out with someone else.

As much as I dislike people constantly checking up on me when I am just browsing, but appreciate it when I am going for a purchace.

Some Guitar Centers are better than others so do not let one bad experience keep you from visiting GC. Remember management and crews change all the time.

I cannot believe I am sticking up for GC, but have to point out the good things about increased employee to customer ratios.

Anyone who complains about a store having security must be looking to steal something. All retail business have stuff stolen all the time. Because of this prices go up.

Or we're just classy and would like to be treated as customers, not potential thieves.

The dude saw me coming from the counter with all the $@!& I just bought and still checked my bags that their own worker just handed me seconds ago.

Like I said, I understand their position, but doesn't mean it doesn't suck.

Having 1000,s of dollars of gear stolen sucks. Them checking your stuff when you leave is no big deal.

I used to travel WAY TOO MUCH for work, and will bet I've been in more GC's than most folks, and I have no gripes at all.

I've bought used gear, new gear, big stuff and a whole lot of little stuff, even a travel guitar and if I've never had an issue with returns or with hassles on the way in or out. In fact, if there was a GC in the town I was working in I wouldn't even need to pack my Traveler cuz I could just go down to GC to practice or kick tires all I wanted (I'm sure the folks in the hotel rooms next to mine appreciated it too!)

Every guitar forum has it's occasional 'I Hate GC' thread but I have had nothing but good dealings with them.
