Hello, I'm not sure if someone has asked this before but here it go.

I have a American Fender Stratocaster(2008) and it has the original hard case. The thing is; I'm going abroad and I was informed by the Flight company that I can take my guitar with me, but not as carry on luggage.

I never took my guitar abroad so I was wondering whether the original hard case would be strong enough or my guitar would probably be dameged.

Please help
Thanks

It's a crapshoot. They may trash it, or it may make it unscathed.Gotta go with your intuition on this one. Good luck . Welcome to the forum........... 8) Mike

I brought one back from Puerto Rico, and the flight attendant was nice enough to let me put it up front in their area...It seems to me that there are aLOT of people who bring them aboard(Usually in a soft case). I would say it kinda depends on the airline. If it has to be stowed with all other luggage...it could very well be damaged. I'll go one further and tell you that if they damage it....you are outta luck on any reimbursment. This link may help: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5YGc4zOqozo or you can take this advice on how to pack your guitar, but i wouldnt be throwing mine off a roof..... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hUczbnRMrk0
good luck!

Thanks for the links.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

If was me and I was going on vacation and not gigging, I would buy a $75 pawn shop special to take and leave the MIA at home. If the cheapo survives you can keep it for a spare or a project.

Which airline? I've flown with guitars on Continental, Southwest, Jetblue...you can check the fine print of your airline and find out the size of the overhead compartments. There should be something about musical instruments in there. Most hardshell cases WILL fit. I had my son's 57 Vintage Hotrod in its tweed case on board without problems.

Don't fly United... They break guitars...Here's a link to a hilarious but sad video of one man's experience.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5YGc4zOqozo

Eventually United settled with the man and Taylor got him a new guitar because this became so popular on You Tube... :D

Hey guys, I am actually in the UK and going to Brazil, I'll be flying with TAM, not sure if any of heard of.

It just weird because when you call them, you talk to someone who says you can take it with you so when you get to the airport they won't let you. Couple years ago my dad went to Brazil and took his accordion with him, they said he could take it as carry on luggage, but when he got to the airport they wouldn't let him, it was in a hard case and he saw his accordion being trown they broke his $3,000 accordion. He went again a couple of weeks ago with a diferent accordion in a gig bag and they said it was ok to take with him.
Anyway, that's what was bugging me, thanks for your help guys, I'll contact them again and I'll record this time so if they say I can take as carry on luggage I'll have proof if they try to stop me.
I'll probably take in a gig bag like my dad did so there's no way they stop me from taking aboard with me.

Thanks very much you guys, you really helped

Phill :)

This ones pretty sturdy. Though I admit I haven't flown with it. It's hard plastic and has built in TSA locks.

ChrisNJ, that's the one I have.
If it was foam inside the guitar would be safer, it feels like some sort of polystyrene which I pretty sure is like most guitar cases. When it's foam, even if you drop it wouldn't affect the instrument, most FLIGHT cases normally uses foam instead of polystyrene.

What makes you think there's no way they can stop you?

I flew from Cleveland to Florida and back and checked my Squier guitar through in my American Standard case. It made it fine in both directions. I flew Southwest, whose regulations specified a carry on dimension that the guitar violated. I didn't want to have to deal with trying to talk an attendant into letting me take it on the plane, or having to gate check it if they didn't, so I just checked it.
