Hi all, I have a few fenders and a squeir P Bass I want to sell.

Only trouble is I have beebn on a certain site called g..tree and it's terrible, I seem to be gettign a lot of timewasters and people asking me to partake in scams, the usual I have 'travellers cheques' or I'll 'pay' via paypal.

Anyone know any good sties where I can sell my mint US Strat, fairly used Toronado and the mint P Bass?

cheers!

Only problem is I don't know anyone who would want to buy it, I'm looking for somewhere where a serious buyer would look and then come to test it, then buy it if they want it.

I'm sticking to my cheap guitars as I don't play that often anymore

Other thoughts would be local paper classifieds (the old school way to sell a guitar) or a similar publication. The problem with that is that you usually have to pay for the ad, so if you don't end up selling the item it just ends up costing you more.

The classified ads in Guitarist magazine are free and I've heard people say they were very pleased with how those types of sales worked out. Down to how you work it though: no protection of any kind.

And it depends which country the OP is in.

I'm assuming FleaBay is excluded from this thread, is it? ...Why?

Cheers - C

I think ebay is alright if you want to sell old cds or something, but charges extortionate amount for high value items.

I'm in UK btw

I'll probably give the mags a shot, I'm selling my US Strat for about £630-650. V cheap cnsidering I paid £800 for it and it's hardly been used!

Ebay has its fair share of time wasters. It took me three times to sell my 1948 Gibson because of fake bids and nonsense.

For sure.

From the other side of the fence, I just bought an ex-demo pedal from a guitar shop via Ebay. First it arrived without the prerequisit power supply, and it took days to get them to send it. And when it arrived it turned out the pedal was dead - which they must have known if they were demo'ing it in the shop.

Initially they were slow and unhelpful with their communications. But a quiet little word about Ebay's conflict resolution procedures and suddenly they were all sweetness and light.

FleaBay ain't perfect. But it has its safety nets...

Cheers - C

Ha! Then take a look at how the small ads in the back of Guitarist work. Quite a good system - but you are on your own if there are problems. Take appropriate care.

Good luck - C

Might try Craigslist under musical instruments. It's free and gets alot of hits.

I also agree, i have done many deals off of craigslist, and aside from some time wasters when i'm selling. I have scored a lot of very sweet deals. Selling is where you take a hit, it's pretty much customary to sell your gear at 1/2 of the new price. You can ask for more if you have newer stuff in mint condition. In my experience it's been a buyers market. Having scored loads of excellent items super cheap, selling at the half of new price is allright. Iv'e made a lot more great deals buying than taking the hit selling at that 1/2 mark. Just make sure you only sell face to face for cash. i've done a couple of paypal deals, but only after i saw proof that they were reputable sellers.

This isnt entirely true. I recently sold a 2004 SRV artist series on CL for $1,000 to a session musician in Nashville. The trick is to be patient! It took a month to sell the SRV, but I got every cent I was asking for it.

Its also worth mention that I live over 300 miles away from Nashville. The city I live in has an extremely small music scene. Which means the demand for higher end instruments is even more limited. So I list my sales in larger cities (such as New Orleans, Birmingham, Nashville, and even Atlanta) to broaden my potential market base. Then offer a competetive shipping rate or free shipping if they pay asking price. Believe it or not, I've had amazing success with this route!

I love it! i do see a fair amount of people asking for way more than half of new price, for choice items like you offered.

I'll sell guitars in the local paper, in the regional bargain finder, word of mouth, Kijiji, harmony central. Anything BUT eBay. I will not do it Sam I am.
