so john is sitting in spain in 1966 with an acoustic and writes strawberry fields forever.

obviously he had been writing songs for a long time by then, but i am interested in why the chords in this song complement each other so well,

is it that he would just pick random chords and fit them together until they sounded good, or is there a structure or formula behind the chords used in this song?

G Bm Dm
No-one i think is in my tree
Am Am/G F
I mean it must be high or low
G C Am
That is you can't you know tune in but it's alright
F G F C
That is I think it's not too bad

G Bm Dm
Always, no, sometimes think it's me
Am Am/G F
But you I know when it's a dream
G C Am
I mean I think a no will be a yes but buts its all wrong
F G F C
That is i think i disagree

C*
Let me take you back cos im going to
Gm Gm7
Strawberry fields
A7
Nothing is real
F A7
And nothing to hung about
F C Am
Strawberry fields forever
F C Am
Strawberry fields forever
F G F C
Strawberry fields forever

Sting said years ago -- tongue in cheek -- that the only one who writes songs is God, and that the songwriters just write it down and take credit for it. He said the only difference between good and bad songwriters was their ability to hear the song from God.

This has really nothing to do with the original post, huh ... ?

In my mind, the ability to write a good song is using an area of the brain that I don't have access to.

We've all learned some theory, and know some progressions in order to play...but to come up with such combinations as this and making it work is just amazing to me.

Even music I don't like, I.E. today's popular country music. I don't like it at all but I can respect someone's ability to write a song that people will listen to and like.

WI KISSfan, thanks for posting, always liked the song.

01GT eibach, I had not seen that quote before "Sting said years ago -- tongue in cheek -- ", I tried that and it makes you have a lisp when you talk or sing, Sting does have an original singing style.

Writing songs is a total mystery to this picker. Makes no more sense than translating old Sears catalogues into Sanskrit and broadcast them into outer space.

On the other hand, 'can write prose at the drop of a dry booger, on any of a thousand subjects. Go figure.

Hooray for the Beatles, they really were all but beyond the ability of words to describe them in their prime.

Hi Lite'nin,
I might be able to get over to Liverpool again during the summer. I'll get some more pics.
I remember last time, the Eleanor Rigby statue had vanished. Somebody might have put it back now  I might have more time this trip so I'll try and find something on George and Ringo. A few other things too.
Yeah, I'm looking forward to going, always nice.
Cheers pal :D

Hi gents: just a few days ago I had the notion of doing some Forum photos from early Knopfler tracks, particularly Walking in the Wild West End from the first Dire Straits album. In that number he buys his coffee beans at Angelucci's and a waitress watches him crossing from the Barocco Bar.

Oh dear. Turns out Angelucci's still exists but has moved away to North London and the owner of the Barocco Bar went bust in 1999: it is now a Thai restaurant. I've a feeling Mandy (the "go-go dancing girl") is currently washing dishes at the Waldorf, and we haven't had conductresses on the number 19 or any other bus for decades.

The 19 still runs down Shaftsbury Avenue: I could get a photo of that I guess... :?

For anyone as has no idea what I'm talking about, turn your computer's speakers on: Angelucci's website plays the track in the background. A fave to jam along with...

http://angeluccicoffee.com/aboutus.php

Oh well...

Cheers - C

Hi Ceri,
I feel your pain man. So much that I remember from the 60's-70's just isn't there anymore and there was so much.
Very sad.
