I'm considering buying a guitar for my nephew. He's 11 years old. I don't know anything about guitars but I do know Fender is really good.
I know everyone here knows alot about giutars so I was wondering, does anyone have a suggestion as to where, how and what I should buy my nephew. I would greatly appreciate it.

THANKS
Jon

Hi Jon,

Firstly, welcome to the forum.

Can I ask what sort of budget are you working to for the guitar? Obviously this will make a lot of difference in what we can recommend to you.

Does your nephew already play the guitar? What style of music is he in to?

Russ :)

Mim Tele and Mim Strat are both great, versatile guitars. The strat has more pickups equalling more sounds and the tele has 2 = less sounds. But dont put aside tele its a great guitar. I would go for a Strat. Strats have maple and rosewood necks. Rosewood isnt as bright and is more mellow, maple is brighter and more in your face (sorta) Same thing on teles

WELCOME!!! :D
Take him to a music store. Let him play a few guitars.
See what he is comfortable with, (and what you are comfortable spending). Remember at that age, he may not stick with it or know what he is into just yet.
Make an educated guess from there.

1+ on what BastardN says, or if you want it to be a suprise, get him a guitar that would be easy for a begginer, like a squier bullet strat.

And that is why I like my friend Riley.

I couldn't help but laugh when I went and tried a MIM Tele after and I loved it, it will be my next guitar.
Same thing happened when I was looking for an acoustic I tried a $700 Taylor and I couldn't stand it (I tried another one and like it, but it was out of my price range) and then I played a $400 Simon & Patrick and got it that second.

I have and have played $1,000-$3,000 ,.....and up guitars.
I love my $100.00-$300.00 guitars.......as well.
I have to say I like my Squier's as well as my Fender's...MIA....MIM...etc.
I'm with you "GOME!!!"-N 8)

Hi tri2bmi123 and welcome to the forum. Considering your nephews age, you could try one of these.

They are great guitars for beginners and you can't have a complete quality kit of new stuff for a better price. Don't hesitate to ask more questions. Keep us posted and good luck. :)

Uh... Correct me if I'm wrong here but is this just spam? I meen he's made one post and if you click on is account page he has a URL link to his website. I've seen spam that is identical to this before- if it isen't sorry and a squier is a great starter guitar!

I'd stay away from the starter packs unless you can talk them into a free setup. Otherwise it will chew his fingers up and he'll likely quit.

For my money, I'd take a $300 used MIM over a cheap starter pack anyday. You won't get the junk amp that comes with the starter pack but they are easy to find - the pawn shop where I go has a dozen of them for $15 each. When he gets better and its time for a decent amp at least he will already have a good guitar to go with it.

My son(also 11) used to complain about sore fingers until I got around to taking his guitar in for some work. After he got it back he started practicing twice as much No more complaints about his fingers - just his shoulder from the weight after he started practicing more. Was at the store shopping in the automotive section and saw some seat belt shoulder pads for less than $3 so got one for each of us. About 10 inches long, nice padding, and assorted colors. Took a few seconds to velcro them on the guitar straps and made a world of difference.

A $100 Squier Strat pack can still have the potential to be half-way decent. Just in case it doesn't hold his interest too well.
