I know you were drunk, but i think i know what you're getting at when you say shape the sounds. ie, often when i hear clapton play from live performances, i can "hear shapes"...

+1 to all of that. i too, am a little drunk as i read this. we spend hundreds/thousands of dollars on instruments, and in some cases, hundreds on aftermarket hardware and electronics. but it wasn't until i began to really focus on the way my fingers play the bass that i could begin to arbitrarily shape my tone.

I've realised half of the tone comes out of picks, but i get what your saying
