Good Evening Forumites,

As some of you know I was involved in an accident almost 2 months ago and haven't been able to play/practice much due to pain in my left shoulder and arm. I started physical therapy a couple weeks ago and have not progressed as fast as I wanted to.

Tonight I started out playing some Blues, but then I got so mad over the pain in my arm/shoulder and not being able to hold bends and transition between notes well I switched to some really heavy Heavy Metal chunchy riffs.

The wierd part was when I started playing aggressive, I did not notice the pain. I wasn't aware of anything but keeping the rhythm and pattern going. Totally lost in "The Zone". When I finally stopped playing, my shoulder did not hurt as much as it did before and still does not.

I know they say music helps the healing process, but aggressive Metal riffs, who knew?

I hope this is the turning point of recovery so I can get back to my regular pain-free life.

Could be that extra shot of adrenalin was just what you needed, RK.

I hope your recovery continues.

Yeah, sometimes you just get in the zone where nothing else matters!

Did your shoulder not even ache the day after or anything?

Glad to hear you are pushing yourself and strengthening the muscles and tendons that were weakened when you got hurt. Just do not over do it right now, and remember to take a 10 to 15 minute break for every hour of playing.

Funny you should ask. Yes it hurt today, especially after mowing the yard. I am hoping to get into the zone again tonight before going to bed. I slept good last night.

Very good advice. I usually do not play for more than an hour at a time when practicing at home.

I have a friend, who I jam with on a regular basis. He's actually a very good lead guitar player. Anyway......he woke up one morning to lots of pain in his left hand. He also discovered that he could not move his thumb (close his hand) in the direction of his index finger. Of course this made it very hard to grip a guitar neck. All this happened about six months ago. He's been to doctors, and they still don't know what the problem is.

Anyway.....he's very stubborn and still plays the guitar every day. He's learned to adjust his grip and technique, so that he can still play, and just as good. He still has pain, but he just sucks it up and plays, often up to 4 hours at a time. So.......there is always hope. The two of us are now trying to get a band together.

I just could hold the notes last night and got mad. Aggression turned into a Metal onslaught. I felt much better afterwards. I am glad your friend is working through it. I hope the doctors have done X-rays and/or a MRI to see what is going on. Mine is an inflammed muscle spasm in my shoulder and neck which is affecting a nerve. I have good and bad days. I'll live and I do play every day regardless of the pain.

as zappa said , music is the best , :) i know how you feel mate , after slipping a disc in my neck and spending 3 weeks to a month on my back on morphine tabs (prescribed ) iended up with no feeling in my left arm/ hand , so i started playing again after a long break and it has helped a lot , the numbness is down to 2 fingers now and getting better with every passing month :) , stick at it and you'll be back to your old self , it might take a bit of time but it will come , cheers
Alan
