I've tried quite a few fuzz pedals since I play a lot of 60's type stuff, and I was surprised at how good the Boss FZ-5 Fuzz was. The only better Fuzz I could find was the Dunlop Jimi Hendrix Fuzz Face which is styled after Jimi's Dallas Arbiter Fuzz Face, but it's a bit pricey.

I've never tried a Double Muff so I can't help you with that.

If you can find one (they were discontinued several years ago), try the Dunlop JH2S Jimi Hendrix System Classic Fuzz--a little red pedal the same size as a MXR Phase 90, but basically set up like a Fuzz Face. They don't muddy up the tone, and you can play chords without it turning into oatmeal, too...it keeps the clarity and definition of each string.

Alan this guy's pedals are stunning, I use two of his fuzz's. He doesnt bootstrap the transistors either like most fuzz's so you get no odd order harmonics in the fuzz. Tell him Nick sent you, he'll build to your requirement if you ask (usually takes a couple of weeks).

I'd go for the reactor fuzz on that page for what you want, that latter Doors sound.

On this page

I use the Mosquito and the BritFace. The Mosquito more so because of it's sheer aggressive sound.
The Britface is great but can be a little too tame at times. Brilliant for violin like sounds. I wouldnt be without it, though it takes some time to get used to.
I have tried the reactor fuzz a few times, I'd quite like one but it is a little too 70's sounding for most of the stuff I do.

Hey Ninja, Does this guy do one that gives you the old Yardbirds sound, I used to have one built into an amp made for me by a local electronics guy, when I first started out, way back in the early sixties. It was brilliant, never had anything quite like that since. He was way before his time that old dude. Amazing.

Ah well, last post ...... hmmf. Big ominous thunder and lightning outside too, drat I haven't covered the pool I bought from argos. The problem is, alone I have to get in the thing to drag the cover across. Suppose I'd better really tempt fate and hold a 30ft aerial in one hand whilst I get in the thing.

He'll make what you want. Just tell him what you want, give him some time, pay for it and it will arrive one day in roughly a couple of weeks. He'sworked on guitars for all sorts of people, and made pedals for Billy Gibbons. Take a look at this very understated history
http://www.projectguitarparts.co.uk/Pages/aboutus.html.

One of the nicest and most accomodating people I've ever had the pleasure to meet. And also one of a very select few people I'll let repair my guitars.
Like I said, just tell him Nick the Brummie with the Tummy sent you.

One of the best fuzzes out there these days, though a bit pricey ($250), is Ryan Kirkland's Skinpimp pedals...custom built to a certain extent, graphics can be yours, amazing sound and amazing hand crafted quality.
Check out this long thread on The Gear Page http://www.thegearpage.net/board/showth ... p?t=494203 for more details and photos.
Here is mine; I picked the graphic and sent him the file...I love old sci-fi posters. Michael's has a photo of NYC.

All turret boards are made of various hardwoods and exotic woods, he uses Mullards and other NOS stuff.
Another good fuzz is the Hartman Vintage Germanium Fuzz. Michael has that one also, but with a Hendrix-Mayer mod that is no longer available..NKT275 transistor.
After all, you can never have too many fuzzes.

I had the Muff when they first came out. It was a little box that I hung out of my guitar. One knob and a slider switch to turn it off and on. Later on I bought another one to plug into the amp and cascaded the two. It sounds way different than the Big Muff Pi. These boxes were incredible sounding at the time. I almost bought the Double Muff, but instead I got the old schematic and bought the components from Mouser Electronics to build my own. The original Muff was very sloppily point to point wired. You're going to have some fun with the new toy. Congrats.

+1 on "you can never have too many fuzzes"
also I have the Dunlop JH classic fuzz too, the little red box, and can confirm it sounds great, very fuzzy but clear as you need too. One of the favourites in my pile-o-fuzz-pedals.

i recently tried a durham crazy horse, the most amzing fuzz pedal i have put my hands on, it goes from smooth and rich to farty and nasty very well, and it has a very cool feature, it will starve the circuit, like a weak battery!! this is a very cool pedal and i will be adding one to my arsenal very soon

Sounds great. I love that weak battery sound, I buy cheap batteries for recording with, soft power is sweeeeeet... nice on a wah too.
