This Sunday is my daughter's Christening. I am trying to convince my wife that we should take whatever money we are given and buy her some gear, probably a Strat and a Blues Jr. amp now so that it would be that much closer to vintage when she wants to start playing. I would of course need to test this gear on a weekly basis to ensure it's in fine working condition for her when she starts playing.

Is it wrong to spend the money on gear, for her I mean, gear for her? ha ha.

It's only wrong if your don't buy her a guitar and amp CURRENTLY considered vintage so that it will be REALLY worth something when she's 18.

I'm such a spoil-sport, huh?

I would avoid new gear too as an investment. Look at 70's strats. Up to 40 years old now and not going for much more than £8K for a 1970.

Dont expect the current rate of accumulation to continue either. It's got to give out at some point. Your far better off trust funding the money for her.

Hi goose63: yes, it's wrong. You know it's wrong.

Do it!

here's what i am doing:

my grandson will be christened on father's day. i really want him to play guitar, as neither of my kids wanted to.

a few years ago, my wife bought me a squire strat for my birthday. i was talking about my old strat, and she got a picture from my folks. she then found one that was very similar.

i still have the guitar, it's in great shape, and when my grandson hits about 6 years, i will take the guitar to him, along with a practice amp, to gauge his interest. if he wants to stick with it, i'll upgrade him at that point.

i would hate to invest money now. i don't know if he'll want to play, and you never know what the value will be.

now... if you are doing this so you'll have some new gear to play for yourself the next few years--- that's a different story

just my 2 cents worth

Goose I like the way you think man. You know it's hard on gear to be just sitting around not being used. I think it is your parental duty to keep that gear in use until your can use it

A lot of great feedback! Thanks everyone, I appreciate it! Now to get the wife on board who wants to put it away for something useful like college or something, ha ha!

That's the worst idea I've ever heard!

I'm sure she would be much happier with a Super Reverb or a Twin.

G'day Mrs goose63. May I say how well you're looking today, ma'am?

Just thought you should know that in the considered opinion of all the professors of guitarology here on the Forum musical instruments stay in much better condition and so hold their value if they are played regularly. Actually, there's even a small dose of truth in that!

Let Mr goose63 play that gear from time to time. He's doing everyone a favor.

Have a great weekend, Mrs goose63 - and whatever that is you've done with your hair, it looks great!

Cheers - C

Why not give her whatever you're playing now? That will be older and more vintage than anything you could buy new today. 8)

You know the answer. I say put that money into a high yield CD or IRA and if (and when) she decides to learn to play the guitar, you can buy it with the interest and she still has money from the Christening. I know from experience that 17 to 18 years goes by really fast and you will be glad you saved/invested that money for her later down the road...you know...college, wedding, a new car when she starts to drive, ect...

Sorry, just trying to save you from the mistakes I have already made.

start her a ROTH IRA. its a better investment. when she gets to be 18, she will have enough for a nice house and a good headstart on college.

You know better then that! Do Her a real favor and put it into an account for a College fund to be used 18 years from now.

There's no guarantee that she will want to play a musical instrument at all when she gets older, let alone play the guitar. Sounds to me like you want this stuff. Selfish dude, selfish. At the least put the money in a Treasury bond for her, then she can do what SHE wants to with it when the time comes.
