I've been going round and round on this for about 6 months.
I'd like to find a comfortable, especially for long practice sessions, stool of some kind that offers portability.

I've tried the traditional "bar stool" chairs that most guitar sections of music stores have and the chair rungs aren't at a comfortable height.

Of cousre, have tried any number of plain wood, upholstered wood, reclining and rocking style chairs.

I've tried foot stools, ottomans and a couple of round drum thrones.

The only one that is really comfortable is an old leather covered ottoman at home, but it's not a friendly piece to lug around.

Does anyone use a bicycle seat shaped drum throne? The couple that I tried seem comfortable but lean forward a bit too much and don't seem to have an adjustment for that kind of lateral change. I am going to try to find someone with a roc-n-soc in stock to try today.

Any suggestions for an old guy trying to get a new habit are very welcome.

I always stand or sit on an amp :?

However i would sometimes sit back on a computer chair which was always pretty comfy. Just be careful when your getting into it that the wheels on it dont cause you to fly of it... i learned that the hard way...

I use this keyboard bench:

http://accessories.musiciansfriend.com/product/On-Stage-Stands-KT7800-Standard-Keyboard-Bench?sku=452018

When I play sitting down I like to have my legs 90 deg or less to my body so the guitar doesn't slide around and the bench can be lowered to the perfect height. It also tucks away pretty easy.

Thanks for the great suggestion....sometimes I miss an obvious choice.

I'll look into that one later today.

Hi Flashback: I was about to be humorous and silly but then I realised your question was meant seriously, so I'll give it a serious answer (and save the jokes for another time).

Couple of nights ago I watched Mark Knopfler play a long set on the stool pictured below. (Apologies for the picture quality, but it is cropped from a much larger photo.)

Gotta tell you, it makes you feel old when you go to see a guy you watched rip it up as a kid and he's now delivering his show sitting down. :( However, he explained he was having major sciatic nerve problems and we were lucky he wasn't doing the gig from a hospital bed. So we'll give him the benefit of the doubt - for now.

Anyhow. The point is that when he got up you could see the seat was a regular office type one, though with a more groovy looking two tone leather covering. I can't possibly tell you the brand, but I think the crucial features would be that it was adjustable for height and back angle, seemed to have proper lumbar support, and also has that rail round the legs for your foot to go on - very useful for a guitarist. You don't get that bit even on the most expensive drum throne.

I'm guessing it's really a draftsman's chair, and that would be the section of an office furniture catalog I'd look in for one. With maximum adjustability you choose the height and angle that suits you best!

If MK uses one on stage it must be cool... I guess :?

Cheers - C

PS That's the Pensa-Suhr he's playing through two Reinhardt amps and Marshall cabs, for anyone who's wondering. :D

I chill in a big lazy boy. More than once I have dozed off while strumming softly . . .

I have one of the Fender seats ( the prize in the pic comp), it's actually pretty comfy. Handy for chucking stuff inside too, cables, mics, pedals, Alanssaab will confirm  He says I need "roadie" lessons  I've got a Gibson barstool too, I find I use the Fender seat more 8)

Just got back from my local dealer and got the On Stage KT7800 Plus. It's a bit bigger and heavier duty......thanks for the suggestion!

While I was there, I also enquired about the horrible delivery time on a Jeff Beck in Surf Green and a new American Deluxe in Olympic Pearl with a Maple Neck. They called their contact at Fender and he told them the problem is they changed paint vendors and that is whats causing the severe delay ( I ordered them the first of April )....going to a water based poly paint ?

I know nothing about that stuff, but it sounds like a good reason, even if it isn't true.

As always, thanks for all the help!

That sounds quite likely. You can have polyurethane - like on American Fenders - based on different solvents, and manufacturers in many areas are moving over to water based ones for environmental and employee health reasons. The motor industry went over to water based paints ages ago - and you don't usually see the finish falling off cars. (Though even as I type I bet someone is going to take issue with that... )

They swivel.
There's no arm rests to get in the way.
They're hieght adjustable.
They keep your posture correct.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

Completely off topic, but, how was the show Ceri?

I am a big fan of Mark Knopfler and love his 'touch' on the guitar. No one else quite sounds like him!
