Ike Turner, a Strat Pioneer, has left us today. Hope we can collectively remember his often-overlooked contributions to music and guitar playing. Rest In Peace.

I'm sure Tina can forget about his contributions, hehe.

Yep, Ike was a pioneer.

... and remember that "Proud Mary," written by John Fogarty, isn't one of them.

True, he didn't write it, but he and Tina sure rocked the hell out of it. Alot of what we take for granted as rock musicians Ike paved the way for. As a bandleader he came up with killer arrangements, as a guitar player I always loved his Strat tone.

RIP, man.

Nope, I can't mourn the death of an abusive &#$)O%!!! like him. If it wasn't for Tina no one would even remember who he is.

I would never assume to put down Tina, but I would sure know who Ike Turner was without her. He is fundamental to the sound called rock n' roll. His personal transgressions and demons have overshadowed that, and it's a shame, but it's also his fault. The fact that Tina went on to be adored and lauded as the Rock Godess she is, while his contributions remain known only to those who care to look into rocks history is a fitting end. I mourn the death of the musician. I honestly can't mourn the death of the man, mostly as I never knew him personally, not because of what he'd done.

Just like I never got all the screaming idiots crying over John Lennon or Kurt Cobain...you didn't know him why are you crying? Ike turner as a musician and bandleader deserves our respect, as a man, that may be a different story. Still, I'm not dead yet so i'm not done F'in up my life either, and I'm far from perfect, so I don't think I'll be throwing stones at anyone.
I'm sure that the Ike Turner of 2007 is a much different man, then the Ike Turner of 1973. No one is perfect, and everyone messes up...some more then others, some in a more public fashion.

I shortened your post because it deals only with my response.

I'm one of those people that cried when Lennon died, and I cried on Dec. 8th this year 27 years later. He wasn't just a musician, he had hope for mankind which is a trait lacking in today's society.
I cried when Janis, SRV, Jimi, Jim, Johnny Cash, June Carter Cash, Vivian (Johnny's first wife) passed on... well the list is long. You get my point. Maybe it's cause I'm a female, or maybe it's because I care.

When 9/11 occured I cried too, but so did a lot of people around the world.

Wow, you must not be touched at all by the music you hear. I guess that's the source of your pain.

I wouldn't bet on it. Also, his abusive ways started alot earlier then 73'.

I'll agree with that point. But I don't care how much somebody messes up, there is still no excuse for abusing a woman. That is something that is totally uncalled for.

Either that or your "scathing" wit.

I'll agree with that. It was totally uncalled for, but it doesn't change the impact he had on what we hear and play, no matter what people may want to think. Alot of people have a hard time reconcilling the fact that a great musician, or artist, or anything for that matter may not be the best person. Everyone has flaws, some way more then their share, that doesn't make their contributions less. No matter how much some people like to lie to themselves otherwise.

Since you've decided to adopt some kind of high horse attitude about this, please allow me to inform you... the problem with your argument is Ike's lack of impact.

He was just another soul revue bandleader doing what every other soul revue bandleader was doing in his time. No innovation, nothing new to speak of, not even a particularly good guitar player. If you've got any evidence to the contrary (and that means something other than "Rocket 88"), then share it, instead of making snotty comments that only hint at your superior understanding.

In my estimation, Ike Turner was just another guitar player, who is most famous for beating up Tina Turner because he didn't have much else to be famous for. Hell, even Mike Tyson is still mostly thought of as a boxer.

Ike's technique and aggressiveness on the Strat was innovation as the Strat itself was brand new. No one had heard it used like that, wether it's "correct" or not, it sounded great. His arrangements were great, and you may chalk them up to another soul revue band leader, but I think he had a great ear, and in the early days was a bit ahead of his time. As a musician, he was a solid player and new how to be part of a band and still lead it. (in the instrumental sense, not the personal relationship sense)

My "high horse" attitude towards you comes as a direct response to your smart-assed comment about how much I've been touched by music. It had no relevance to anything else going on in this thread except to "hear" yourself "talk", and marvel at how witty you apparently think you are. It's the type of jab I've seen you throw at alot of posters on this board, in many threads, and it's tired. Thanks.

Now that was good.

back to Ike.....funny how such a talented man just dropped off the map after the real talent got tired of his crap and left. No one would even know Ike's name if it wasn't for Tina. He wouldn't even be a foot note in rock history if it wasn't for Tina and his woman beating ways. I don't mourn him, admire him, respect him at all. The only person who thought Ike should be famous was Ike (and apparently King of Pain)....and whenever he realised that he beat Tina.
