Which one would you choose? There's a mom and pop store that's having a sale on their amps. Here's two I'm looking at.

1. Peavey Vypyr 30x amp (no they don't have the 70 one so I can send away for the free pedal).

2. Roland 30X amp. They have a 20X one too.

This is the 30X

Any suggestions? They don't have any others besides these two brands and styles or the amps are too small for my taste. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I have the Roland 30x. It is a very good practice amp, it has a headphone jack for those times you cannot play loud. It is not good for keeping up with a drummer and bassist. You can run your CD/MP3 player through it.

I am not of a Peavy man, but the last Peavy I owned was back in the 80's and I could not stand it. I have been turned off Peavy ever since.

Roland 30X, a friend of mine has this amp, and it's great.

Peavey hands down. I'd take a 12" speaker over an 8 any day of the week.
The VYPYR has Trans Tube Technology too. Out of the solid state amps, the new Trans Tube amps are pretty nice. If you can, try them both out. I tried a Cube and it sounded toy- like to me. YMMV

When I get out of work for the summer, I'll see what I can get. I want to get the Peavey 75 one but they don't carry that in stock (the mom and pop store I go to) and they're not going to carry peavey amps anymore. I would like to get one to play more in public once I get better at it. I was thinking of getting one online but I'm afraid that if it doesn't work, it'll be too much of a hassle to return it.

Did anyone ever buy amps over the net? How was your experience with that? (Sorry, wanted to bump this thread because I'm still debating)

I won't buy any amp without plugging my own guitar into it and putting it through it's paces. YMMV

Peavey is one of the classiest companies out there with hands down the best Customer Service you will find from any gear manufacturer. Peavey proved with the Wolfgang they could make a guitar as good as anyone as the old Wolfgangs are one of my favorite guitars. I have heard the Vyper and can tell you it is a good amp I truthfully cant comment on the Roland as I have not heard it. But I can tell you if you buy a Peavey and something goes wrong they will take care of you in a way that will boggle your mind and if you call CS they will bend over backwards to make sure you are happy. I have actually called up numerous times for build dates or parts for guitars that I have bought used that they knew were used and kept me on the phone 20 minutes searching data bases or taking a parts order and sometimes just talking music. I really wish they made a bigger line of guitars as the HP Custom took over for the Wolfgang and is a killer ax if you need a guitar with Humbuckers. I just have to admit that when a CS department treats you like that you really want to do business with a company.

I've actually tried the peavey in the music store but was too embarrassed to play the guitar loud. The guitar they gave me to use was dreadfully out of tune and no one showed me how to use the amp or tune the crappy guitar they gave me which kind of ticked me off (I know it's a mom and pop store and I wasn't buying yet, just wanted to test it).

From what I did hear of it, it sounded really cool. I just wished they had the 75W in the store because with the rebate, you can get the sanpera I pedal for free. However, this store is offering a 25% discount on the amps (even the vypyr 30W). I didn't plug into the Roland yet. The one guy said the vypyr was too 'bulky' for what it has (which sounded dodgy to me for some reason).

Try not to feel embarrassed when trying new stuff. I do recommend you play either through your guitar or one like your guitar.

To answer your on-line buying question I prefer either Sweetwater or Musicians Friend when buying on-line stuff. I do not buy big items like amps or guitars, I have to hear and feel them before buying.

If you have not heard a Roland, Youtube it. You can also do that for the Peavy as well. There are many reviews and demonstrations there. Best of luck to you and keep us informed which you get.

Peavey's are also made in the USA and easily serviced. Like I said, the Cubes just don't do it for me. I like my Pignose better. If you're new to electric guitar I'd steer clear of lower end tube amps. Especially all the problems with the HRD series amp. It can be really frustrating for a newer player. If your new, I doubt you'll be gigging so a solid state amp would be great. Most are really reliable and once you get into the 30 watt range and 12" speakers, they sound suprising good in the $200-300 range. Effects are fun, but learning all the basics without them for me anyway is more important. Effects IMO just get in the way of a new player.

I'm sorry, if I keep calling you a new player if your not. From your description of your experience at the music shop with tuning and not playing loud, I just assumed you were new. Don't worry about it. Don't be afraid to ask questions and ask them to tune the guitar for you. My advise is to bring your own guitar to the shop to test amps. You'll be way more comfortable with it.
