During the 2008 election cycle, individuals and political action committees associated with BP — a Center for Responsive Politics’ “heavy hitter” — contributed half a million dollars to federal candidates. About 40 percent of these donations went to Democrats. The top recipient of BP-related donations during the 2008 cycle was President Barack Obama himself, who collected $71,000.

BP regularly lobbies on Capitol Hill, as well. In 2009, the company spent a massive $16 million to influence legislation. During the first quarter of 2010, it spent $3.53 million on federal lobbying efforts, ranking it second (behind ConocoPhillips) among all oil and gas industry interests.

Its registered lobbyists include a number of former federal government and high-ranking political campaign officials, including longtime political operative Tony Podesta, former congressional chief of staff Bob Brooks, former congressional legislative director David Pore and vice presidential aide Michael S. Berman, the Center’s research shows.

So are you saying Obama should have done something sooner, but was hesitant to because he didn't want to upset BP and risk future lobbying money from them?

Only he knows that answer! His entire administration is nothing but politicians that have never made a buck in the private sector. His administration has the less private sector experience then any administration has had in 100 years. Under Clinton there was 48% staff had private sector experience under Obama 8% of his staff have private sector experience. 8% they don't have a clue about the working public. This is all public record people just don't read it.

Stopping drilling just to look good is not the answer, all thats going to do is put more people out of work and might just cause prices to go up.
They need to support the people working to stop it and get off the blame game for now and stop trying to look Presidential when you don't have a clue on what is going on. The only thing that can be done is support the effort in any way needed. I have no doubt the Army Corp of engineers and Naval and Coast Guard Engineers are involved with helping B.P. Barrack Obama should just go back to Chicago where he spent Memorial Holiday at least there he is in his element of the crooked Chicago Political Machine.

Obama should have been down there learning what is going on and helping with support by being there. I don't think he has even been on a boat in the Gulf to see the damage. Some times I think there is a key in his back that someone just turns and the talking head starts talking (I WANT THIS AND THAT I AM THE PRESIDENT)

Obama Side Note( I guess its a good thing he did not go to the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier) The man don't respect our Military.

i agree, name calling is unproductive. good solid debate backed with facts is healthy in my opinion. i don't dismiss one's opinion just because it differs from own. i agree to disagree.
trust me, i'm the blacksheep in my family when it comes to politics. i refuse to let it come between me and the ones i love. i consider alot of you folks my family. same goes for ya'll.
c'mon, this is America. we'll get it figured out. hopefully sooner than later. this can't be blamed on one person. i believe mother earth can handle much more than some say she can.

This thread meandered a bit, I like Texas take on it as only a good home grown American girl would see it, " it is about the regular hard working people" I couldn't agree more! We, the regular people always pay the price, not politicians and definitely not corporate fat cats. and to the Chicago Machine idea, if that machine was in charge not one drop of oil would go any where except to a refinery, those guys don't make stupid mistakes, mistakes yes, just not the kind BP made, meaning cutting corners and deep ocean drilling don't mix.

I have no comment on the politics of this thread.

But I would like to take the opportunity to register here that folks around the world, especially in BP's home country, are shocked and dismayed by the whole disaster and send their strongest sympathy and fellow feeling to all those affected by it.

Whatever our political views, making the poluter pay and if it turns out to be appropriate individually prosecuting those responsible is the only way forward. The only thing they take seriously. It ain't good enough - but it's the only show in town.

And let's hope they find a way to plug it soon!

Respect - C

Henry Rollins!!!! What!!!! The dude from Jackass???? If he was member of a real club like the Sons of Anarchy he would not last a day. It all show!!!! He should stick with the stand up comedy with his dirty mouth Christian hate jokes he is known for. Garfield which is Rollins real name used to play these short front things opening for others in clubs around Baltimore when I was in My 20's.

Oh dear me... are the Feds really getting James Cameron involved because of his film such as "The Abyss" and "Titanic". That about sums it up for me. If I see Alec Baldwin and Sean Penn on the beaches I'm totally becoming a liberal and joining the circus. Maybe I'm totally off the mark but is he really much more of an expert on deep water technology than scientists already involved?

He has quite a bit of experience with manned submersible vehicles, which they may need to develop / use. Plus he is RICH.

That's fantastic... I agree and they have my blessing. I really like and respect James Cameron... I have some things in common with that guy... not the RICH part though. I just see this opening the flood gates for SAG to come in because they want to do their part and feel "left out" of the Limelight. If that happens I hope they consult him for his expertise on building Robot killing Machines.
