I would drop a large heavy cap with pressure valves and extraction tube.
Drop the cap, pump the water/oil then close the valve.

IMHO, the delay is more about politics than anything else.
I see no excuse for this spill to continue as long as it has.

first i'd hammer Rahm Emmanuel and Nancy Pelosi into the leak with this Intel Mac Pro that has a busted heat sensor. Then i'd tell all the big oil companies if they want the next big oil contract or the one BP has, to all get in there, roll up your sleeves and fix the issue. I might even call Bruce Willis, he was fantastic in Armageddon. Drilling oil "all his life" and doesn't know how to fail. So he'd get the job done.

They are saying that this oil deposit is larger then Ghawar Field which for over 60 years produced over 60% of the Saudi oil production. Over 6.5% of the oil on the market today is from Ghawar Field.
While they are drilling a relieve well head to stop this one from leaking they should be drilling others into the field down there.
If there is enough oil down there that the U.S. could produce over 6.5% of the Worlds oil on the market from one under water oil field we should be doing every thing to get it. But face it we will never be oil independent in the sense we produce all our own oil. It is a commodity sold on the open market just because its produced here don't mean it stays here.

For those of you who think nukes would work, understand that the procedure does not involve a surface explosion. the russians drilled a relief hole and set off the nukes underground. So a nuke would be no faster than the relief wells they're drilling. The Russians tried it 6 times - it was successful 5 of them. All that worked were gas wells, not oil. the one that failed was a gas well, but had some oil associated with it so there's good reason to belive that it won't work on a strictly oil well. Also if you think that 200,000 barrels a day is a mess, consider 200,000 barrels a day of radioactive oil as worse. In the early 60's the US tried to use nukes to stimulate natural gas production (look up "Project Plowshares"). It worked great except the gas was too radiioactive to use. There's a lot of hydrogen in hydrocarbons and some of it converts to tritium.

BTW, Relief wells do not relieve the pressure, that's happening now with the leak- the relief wells will be drilled to intersect the leaking well and cement will be pumped into it from the relief wells to plug the leaking well. The relief holes (there are two being drilled) will then be filled with cement too. It will take til August because it's not an easy task to guide a 13" well 35,000 feet and intersect a 13 inch hole - it will probably not happen on the first attempt.

I'm not sure I follow. Whom do you propose might be benefitting politically from a delay?

Actually I think one of the other companies (Exxon or Chevron) was getting ready to drill on the same structure but about 5 miles away when this all happened.

Which ones?
From my earlier post.

Three days after the explosion of the Deepwater Horizon in the Gulf of Mexico, the Dutch government offered to help.

It was willing to provide ships outfitted with oil-skimming booms, and it proposed a plan for building sand barriers to protect sensitive marshlands.

The response from the Obama administration and BP, which are coordinating the cleanup: “The embassy got a nice letter from the administration that said, ‘Thanks, but no thanks,’” said Geert Visser, consul general for the Netherlands in Houston.

And the Dutch are pros at this stuff!!!!

Just this week we accepted offers of boom skimmers from Mexico and Canada and the Norwegian Coastal authority is sending over 40% of its spill response equipment. The South Korean's, Germany, France have also offer help. Even the Croatians has offer assistance. Finally Obama is accepting.
