way cool, you're right, order does make a differnce'. someone here will tell you the right order for your set-up. i searched the net on effect pedal routing to help me out. most were the same with just a few differences. try that and then experiment a bit.

I always put the drive/distortion last in line

i agree with the author about 80%. when i ran a lot of effects it went:

guitar/tuner/wah/distortion/comp/delay/chorus/flanger/gate/amp.

when i found an amp that i liked the overdrive tone i changed it:

guitar/effects loop out/tuner/wah/delay/chorus/flange/effects loop in.

now that im older and really dont need all that stuff:

guitar/effects loop in/tuner/flange/loop station/effects loop in.

At the Boss website, there is a "order" as well. these are just starting recommendations, you can do whatever you want... it's your sound...

The info on the BOSS site says something similar:
Code:
Effect units that detect an envelope, such as auto wah and octave, should be connected close to the guitar. The wah pedal is generally connected before the distortion pedal so it can regulate the distortion, though hooking it up after the distortion still sounds good. The wah effect varies depending on whether it's before or after the distortion in the signal chain. Try it both ways to see the difference.

Connect EQ after your distortion so you can totally shape your sound.

Connect reverb units toward the end of the chain for maximum effect.

Decide where to connect chorus/delay/reverb by careful monitoring of the resulting sound.

Connect a volume pedal before delay effects so that the volume can be lowered without cutting off the reverberation. If connected before the distortion pedal, the volume pedal controls the distortion intensity.

Connect a noise suppressor to remove distortion and modulation noise.

Exactly. I don't use that many anymore. But I never liked the wah before my distortion. There are no rules, just rules of thumb. Be creative and try moving stuff around.

ive heard there was a order that kept any one effect from robbing the others of sound quality. just wanted to see if anybody knew the order of things.

Not to hi-jack the thread, but since we're on the topic of compressors coming first, I seem to have misplaced mine.

I was using the Boss CS-3, and I liked it, but since I'm having to replace it, is there something out there that you guys would recommend more?

Personaly I put compression before everything. There are a few compressors that work well in your effects loop (EH Knockout being a great one), to keep punch on high gain sounds. Aside from that instance I dont think they work better after anything except the guitar.

My board goes;
Guitar,
Wireless,
Comp,
Tuner,
Trem,
Fuzz,
Wah,
Drive,
Modulation (flanger/chorus/ pitchshifts),
Delays/reverbs,
Graphic (to add back any lost signal),
Amp/s.

See, the way I look at it most effects rob the guitar and amp of sound quality.
But still, what difference does it make if you like the way it sounds? The one thing I Would use first in the chain would be a compressor. You can also run time based effects like echo, reverb, phase shifter, chorus, flanger etc. through the effects loop if you have one. Don't get too hung up on it. Like I said, I like a wah after distortion pedals. It works for me, but you may hate it. It's all fun though. I used to run tons of effects. Way back I just compensated for it. Most pedals didn't com with true bypass and tone sucked like crazy. You just dealt with it. I'd still rather get my distortion from the amp. Obviously you can't do time based effects without boxes. Sometimes I like a little bit of slapback echo in the loop. It just depends on the room. I play mostly Blues not Floyd or Metal. My music is a lot more primitive.

I usually set mine like this:

Guitar, Wah, Tuner, Distortion, EQ, delay, chorus, amp.

I usually never use more than 3-4 pedals when playing, but on those rare days I get to "bust it out", I can set up like this:

Guitar, Wah (Cry Baby), Tu-2, OS-2, MT-2, HM-2, GE-7, DD-3, CE-2, amp X2. I can get many different sounds from this set-up, everything from Black Sabbath to Maiden.
