Since we're on the subject, maybe we should bring up images in signatures.

Signature pics are not usually the problem.

Many of the bigger pics our members are posting are over 400 Kb. Worse yet I've noticed some pics posted in the past that were hyper-linked to bitmaps (*.bmp files) rather than J-pegs and those can easily be over 3 Mb. The time lag is enormous for those images.

I realize animated gifs are generally not too large. But there are some members who have images in their signatures that are a bit larger than what a signature is meant for. Like, I don't need to see a full size photo of their amp, cabinet, guitar collection, or a collage of every one of their musical influences, on EVERY post they make.

yeah i cant stand that. mine is really small so i dont think that is a problem, but when the signature pic is huge it gets annoying.

Still, the overall standard is 1024x768 for many years...

Hi guys: the monitor I'm using right now is set to 1024x786. I've lost count of the number of times pictures posted on this site make horizontal scrolling necessary at that resolution. Man, that's tiresome when you're reading text!

I'd even suggest that 800x600 is too big. Remember, the part of the page within which the text and pictures appear is a lot smaller than the whole screen width, so it doesn't take a very big picture to push the margins out beyond the screen edge.

I resize all my pics to a maximum of 600 pixels wide and that seems to work nicely within the format of this website. Like this one - which I post with Forum user mclmk8d in mind :D :

Hey Ceri, that's the same pig I saw flying over the station when I passed on the train!!! What an amazing coincidence. I then read the next day in The Sun that he had been shot down by David Laws and claimed as a tax expense, justifying it by saying he was using the pig to feed his tenants; if it's in The Sun, it must be true, right?

Good point and I'm guilty as charged - I've just re-sized the few images I've posted. Sorry for the inconvenience... :)

Unless something is of particular interest to me, I just don't bother looking if the picture is too big. I just can't be bothered with horizontal scrolling. I've come across a few pictures that allow you to boil a kettle whilst they upload. Absolutely no need for that size of file. I'll often have a brew of tea and forget to look at em.

Big images don't bother me.

Seeing the same image copied over and over in the same thread is much more annoying.

I usually try to shrink my images down. Somtimes I forget my older pictures are still big. If some of you are against a pic in the signature box, I can get rid of the pic in my sig. Why don't we all just not post any pics at all? We could just post links to view stuff. We could also get rid of those pesky avatars too.

I keep hearing about how long it takes to load some pictures.. I click into the thread and is all there that quick…are some folks still using dial up. What would be the reason for such a lengthy time to load a thread page…. Not trying to come off as a smart A@^ im truly confused…even if a picture is on the rather large size its not enough data to lag a page loading I would think.. I’m no computer wiz here, help me out. Why would this happen with a pix..

Cheers
Bill
