People, please resize your large pics before posting them in this forum.

Please.

They should be no larger than 800x600 and preferably not even that large. Photobucket has editing software built right into the site and you can save a smaller copy of your pic with a different name for posting on web sites. The smaller pics load faster so the forum runs faster and the threads stay in alignment.

Pretty please?

It's the courtious thing to do. I've been biting my tongue for too long. The truth is, not resizing your pics is simply rude and selfish behavior. I'm sorry if that offends you but there's a sure way to not be offended by it. Start resizing your pics.

And to stop the inevitable argument about picture quality ... if you really feel the need for people to see every electron and proton in every molecule of your guitar you can always post a LINK to your oversize pics.

Thank you!

My comment wasn't aimed at anyone in particular, Jeebus.

Any particular reason why large pictures upset you? I would say 800x600 is pretty reasonable. Especially given that my monitor resolution is 1920x1080.

I am definitely not the first person to mention this frustration but I believe I am the first to post a thread dedicated to the subject. Not everyone has a 24" (or larger) monitor and the sideways scrolling back and forth to read each line is agrivating and the forum slows down as a result also with the added data volume.

It's only common sense to re-size/re-sample. A single 800X600 picture at 72 DPI (the max your monitor can show you anyway) and at say... 70% of full quality... will still be a nice photo on someone's screen and yet will load in a matter of seconds, not minutes. We're talking the difference between a 80kb photo and a 3MB photo. It's significant. For some reason, my DSL will bog down after a day or so of running so I reboot the PC and reset the modem/router. I concur that a re-size is the polite thing to do. 8)

Still, the overall standard is 1024x768 for many years, and even now, that accounts for about 20% of internet users. That should be more than capable of displaying 800x600 photos without side scrolling. Only about 1% of people out there are still using 800x600 as their monitor resolution.

(source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Display_resolution#Current_standards)

I do agree that some people who repost photos off their digital camera in it's native resolution - something like 3000x2000 are irritating.

I agree people should re-size their images to something reasonable that doesn't make browsing difficult for someone but I am pretty sure you can set a max size in phpBB also.

I have to agree, I know I have been guilty of this on occasion but to be perfectly honest I had never thought about it before BMW bringing it up…Makes scene to me… Good looking out BMW; lets make this forum as easy to use as we can.. I hate scrolling side to side to read a post now that I think of it especially if I have limited time on the computer and want to get through a thread in a timely manner….

Cheers
Bill

Since we're on the subject, maybe we should bring up images in signatures.

Hi guys: the monitor I'm using right now is set to 1024x786. I've lost count of the number of times pictures posted on this site make horizontal scrolling necessary at that resolution. Man, that's tiresome when you're reading text!

I'd even suggest that 800x600 is too big. Remember, the part of the page within which the text and pictures appear is a lot smaller than the whole screen width, so it doesn't take a very big picture to push the margins out beyond the screen edge.

I resize all my pics to a maximum of 600 pixels wide and that seems to work nicely within the format of this website. Like this one - which I post with Forum user mclmk8d in mind :D :
