I've never saw Izzy play a Strat EVER. if I'm being honest. I still want it though.

I'm guessing it was just one of many lying around and to my knowledge no Strats were ever recorded but hey, (even  ) I could be wrong.

To my knowledge the guitars Izzy recorded the Illusions with were a 60's Tele, 70's Tele Custom, Goldtop LP and an ES-137 and he had started using Carvin amps along with his Bassman as he had some endorsement deal with them.

I am an uber GN'R fan and that is the first time I have ever seen a pic of Izzy Stradlin with a Strat. Interesting.

Hi to all:

Let me assure you this isn't a posed guitar and was actually Izzy's. Back in 1998 or 1999, Izzy sold to Norman's Rare Guitars this Black Stratocaster and a few other guitars, most notable was his Gold Top.

I was physically there when this all happened. If you look at the wording directly from Izzy, he indicates that "we" used it....Ask yourself, would Izzy who is by all accounts a stand-up guy, pen a letter saying such if it wasn't so?

BTW, I've never opened it up as I wanted to preserve it as much as possible to the condition it came from Izzy...

Thanks,

Jim

I don't doubt it was used. As you said, Izzy is a stand up guy. I just doubt it was recorded with and many of the Illusion songs were written pre-Appetite or in Chicago before they went to the recording sessions.

Its also worth noting that there has been more than 12 guitarists in GN'R between 1985 and 2010 and at no time have I seen a Strat being played on stage by any of them aside from a black/blck copy Slash used once for Bad Obsession slides in 91. Izzy has never used one with Guns, Ju Ju Hounds or solo or any time guesting with anyone. I know Gilby recorded the first Slash's Snakepit album with one.

I suspect it may be the guitar West Arkeen used for the rhythm guitar on The Garden as the only guy I know who favoured them who was on those sessions. (RIP West)

Best of luck getting it sold though. But if you can find a pic of Izzy playing a Strat ever then please post it here as I would be interested in seeing it.

Cheers,

CC

What do you want it for, 10 bucks?

I know that 1970's Strats usually go for anywhere between $1,200-5,000.00, depending on condition. To be honest Izzy Stradlin isn't what I would call a "Icon" in the industry. How do we know for sure that he actually played that strat? For all we know, someone probably asked him to pose with it so they could take the photo and then use it as an excuse to prove that it was "his"! Izzy played Gibsons when he was with Guns, and when he went solo and started using Fenders, they were Telecasters, not Strats!

Jeff, Izzy used Teles on the UYI albums and toured with Guns in 91 using a 60's Tele also.

And just for the record he is MY icon. Anyone who wrote so many hits and plays the way he does is an icon to me. And many others.

CC

Thanks for your well thought out reply. Again, I defer to the letter from Izzy who would have known best about it. I wasn't in the position to asking Izzy directly about the Stratocaster.

A couple of the guitars Izzy sold that day went to the Hard Rock and a few into private collections as is the case of my Black Strat.

Thanks,
Jim

Izzy used a lot of different gear. though he primarily recorded AFD with his ES-125. i remember seeing him use a sunburst tele custom in concert at that time. Also he uses an ESP Tele style guitar in the video for Sweet Child of Mine.

I am not sure on it but I have a vague recollection of someone talking(it may have been slash,) about Slash using a Strat that Izzy had laying around for some stuff, but i can't find the quote, and it may be my faulty memory.

I agree with jeffo though, although $10 might be a bit low, its not too much further away from a reasonable price than the auction is asking.

That was me who said that but this was pre GN'R. When Izzy was in Hollywood Rose and Slash was auditioning while playing in Roadcrew. 6-7 years before the Illusions and it was white.

If one of his Gibbo hollowbodies, LP's or any of his Teles were for sale I would prob make more of a fuss to get the money together. Its just like I said, uber Strad fan here as everyone knows and at no time, ever, have I saw Izzy play a Strat on stage or otherwise.

All of the posts are great, but the fact of the matter is that I personally witnessed Izzy Stradlin selling this guitar to Norman's Rare Guitars back in late 1998 or early 1999, as well as Izzy writing the provenance and have no reason to dispute what Izzy wrote.

I'm not saying I dispute it either bro. I just know I have never seen a photo of Izzy playing one or have I saw him use one in real life.

As I said, best of luck with the sale.

Weird I googled this strat, I have it now in my hand it has all the paper work says it was used in illusion 1 + 2! Izzy signed it and stubbed a cigarette underneath the signature, he must of used it a good bit because he changed the tunning pegs and theres a few little changes!
