what are some good sounding replacement tubes for the hot rod devile amp? 212, 60W.

i want more defined gain channels and still have that lush clean sound. any suggestions would be helpful.

I would say you have to start with the preamp section. For modern tubes, I personally would go with JJs. But I can tell you that you won't be sorry going with some of the less expensive NOS tubes and be much more satisfied. It's a much more involved process, but the results are well worth it and then some.

If you're looking to get some relatively quick, I would go with all JJs preamp and power tubes from Eurotubes. E-mail them with what you want to hear, and they'll personally help you out.

With vintage amps there is also the possiblilty of tweaking the tone by trying alternative rectifier tubes. They can actually have a profound influence on the amp's overall volume and tone. The Deville uses a solid state rectifier but that doesn't mean you couldn't study the effects of rectifier values and choose to find a substitute made to different specs. Maybe try posting this question (or a link to this thread) in the "Modern Tube Amps" forum. You may have better luck attracting responses from people who really know amps inside and out. That's where a lot of them hang out.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

For NOS preamp tubes that are reasonable and well thought of, you can go with a Sylvania or Raytheon blackplate 12AX7 and maybe 2 EIs or an EI and Valvo 12AX7.
