Only been inside a GC one time. Was looking at an American Deluxe Strat when one of the salesmen came up and started dissing the guitar. Wanted me to buy a Les Paul.

Later my friend who works there tells me that the guy had been wanting to buy the guitar himself for the past few weeks so he'd been steering other customers away from it.

Needless to say once the manager found out, his time there was drastically cut short

pretty shady of the salesman, but NOT worth losing his job over.

He had only been there for a couple months and the manager had caught him several times goofing off. That was just the final straw. On top of that he wasn't a very good salesman to begin with.

Sorry should've mentioned that earlier :)

According to my boys there at GC, they don't get first crack at anything, new or used. It has to be in-store for a certain amount of time before they can pounce on it. And they all make minimum wage plus commissions, plus 25-35% discount on what they buy, depending on how long they've worked there. Most of them are in bands and work for the discount, but there is a very high turn-over rate among employees.

I used to always get 10-15% off at the local GC, but they stopped that dead in the water - no more automatic discounts, you have to bring in a coupon, though my guys will usually find me one when I'm in there. I'm a good steady customer and they know it.

Driving three hours to the next closest GC would kind of negate the discount...

I'm not a lover of Guitar Center, but they usually have everything I'm looking for. And if they dont, they will get it for you in a day or so. and you cant get a lower price anywhere. Like the man said (NEGOCIATE). They have taken about $3500. out of my pocket in the last 6 momths. Out of two guitars I have saved about $300. Thats enough for another Acoustic Guitar :D :D

You can always use Musiciansfriend as your negotiating tool. Just say, MF has it with no tax and free shipping. I always use this to save me the sales tax.

Indeed they are. But as a mail-order retail outlet, MF does not labor under oppressive sales tax laws in most states as with a brick-and-mortar store.

GC has a policy that they match, compare and beat prices against other brick and mortar stores. they wont against drop ship net stores. thus MF.

for some reason, a lot of companies wont allow but so many advertised sales per yr on their goods. this was talked about on here some time ago. so your coupon might be allowed for your item but ya just gotta ask in store for the details.

Nope!! All the GC stores I go to have match prices with online competitors thus including GC owned MF. I haggle with them all the time and they often match prices with Sam Ash, Sweetwater, AMS and MF.

yep. mine wont do it. thats why when you go to beat a price it has to be checked by a manager. the manager oks the store your comparing.
plus they are supose to match plus 10% but they never do.
the store they match also has to have a website, so no matching like ebay stores or any store like that either.
