I wish everybody here a Happy Memorial day.

Here in Iceland we don't have any holidays do celebrate our troops, basicllly because we don't have any troops  . But we have a holiday for sailors and fishingmen who have fed our nation through the past 1000+ years. That holiday is celebrated on the first sunday in June.

A lot of Icelandic sailors/fishingmen sacrificed their live in the WW2 while "feeding" the Allied forces and the British nation during the Luftwaffe bombardment on UK. Icelandic fishingship were gunned down by both sides during the war, especially those ship from a shipping company named Eimskipafjelagið (Eimskip today) becouse their flag looked like this:

Image

They had this logo long before some short guy from Munchen with a Napoleon complex started to use it for his political party

But anyway happy holdiday and thanks to all of the allied soldiers that occupied Iceland in WW2.

Oh and PS. Another rant.

In the first episode of the HBO mini series "The Pacific" there is a world map behind the general in the briefing room that shows that Iceland was occupied by the Germans, that never happend. Iceland was under the Danish throne, and Denmark was occupied by the Germans, but Iceland was occupied by the UK forces in May 1940 before the bombing on Pearl Harbor. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iceland_during_World_War_II otherwise a great show, almost as good as "Band of Brothers". 8)

Tyrants never take a day off so I thank all those in service ... from the many countries represented on this forum ... who remain vigilant and on the job. I think we can imagine where we'd all be without the and those who came before them.

It was a touching morning at the Sacramento Valley Veteran's Cemetery.

Pulling up to the entrance there were 5 VA Police vehicle's with lights flashing and Officers directing traffic. Car were parked from the end of the entrance about 3/4 of the way through the cemetery and all the way back out to the street on the road out.
There was a flag placed 1 foot in front of every headstone. There were flowers on about 50% of them. There was an additional parking area set up. There was a huge Memorial Day Ceremony taking place under the huge American flying at half mast. There was a Veteran walking the entire cemetery stopping every so many feet and playing bagpipes.
I place several bouquets of flowers on my Brothers grave and took several flowers and walked down between the rows of headstones and placed one single carnation on several graves. I said a silent Thank You to each. And on my way out of the cemetery I said a silent Thank You to all.

Mike - former U.S. Navy AG2 - CVN-65 Enterprise - 1973

Barbecue tomorrow...cemetarys on Monday.

Peace will come when people live
In friendship, side by side,
And cherish understanding
More than hatred, greed and pride.

I too served on the Enterprise! Although, much later than you, I was doing aviation electronics on 2 separate cruises on the Enterprise during 2003 and 2004 if memory serves correctly.
