I'm thinking about ordering one of these kits, just wouldn't want to screw it up and be out $600.

I havnt but i came very close to pulling the trigger on one of these babies

bhttp://www.guytronix.com/

Only reason i didnt was the anticipated greater flexability of what i ended

up with, an

Emery sound amp.

Reckon a home build would be pretty easy and good fun.

Only experience I have working on amps is I bought a Fender Deluxe 112 Plus off craigslist a couple of weeks ago for $20. You had to fiddle with the jacks to get the sound, other wise it would cut in and out. So I took it apart and saw the solder joints were loose and not making a good connection, so I resoldered those and now it works great.

The video makes it look pretty straight forward. And it seems like a good price. The 5w 57 champ clone is like half the price of a real one. Don't really know how it sounds compared to the real one though.

I have come close a couple of times with the Mojo kit:

but TubeDepot looks like a better deal.

I've never built my own amp, but I have improvised amps with things like radios and TV's.

Have fun building!

Yeah I seen one the Mojo ones put together that someone was trying to sell on Ebay for $1200. I don't know if it sold, but nice little turn around if it did.

Hi Al 87: that's a very interesting website, thank you. (BTW: I think this link might work better: www.guytronix.com .)

Or in our part of the world there is:

http://www.torresamps.com/

And I'm waiting to hear from anyone who's actually used these people's product in real life:

http://www.ceriatone.com/

I like the name! (No relation, sadly.)

Cheers - C

hehe, yeah i trawled loads of websites (no not those ones) and noticed ceriatone.

Couldnt quite find anything on the torres site and i needed a decent looking cabinet initially and im more confident with a soldering iron and wiring diagram than i am with clamps/cloths not to mention a lack of woodworking gear. So.........

Another site located in Woodbridge in Suffolk is ampmaker.com

Now i have a cabinet (emery sound with webber blue pup) the lure of an amp build may return at some point.
Cost a bit with the postage from the states to the UK but hey its all cool.

:)

So........ A joint Forum project? :D

I have the opposite issue. My soldering skills start and finish with guitar innards. Building the insides of an amp just looks too scary from where I'm sitting.

However. A finger jointed marine ply enclosure? No probs! And strangely enough I've just been looking at the fancy-schmancy cladding of the Paul Reed Smith amps and asking myself: "How could we top that?" Howsabout birdseye maple with walnut edging? :D :D :D

Interesting...

Cheers - C

There's a guy who mods amps that lives like a mile from me. He made a pretty nice cab for a tweed deluxe. It's not too fancy, but kind of cool.

Here's his site.

I posted the link a while back. It's a PCB amp. I built 5F1 for a buddy back a ways. You'll be fine. The PCB takes a lot of the stress of wiring goofs out of the picture. I'm thinking about doing one for myself. Go to build your own clone and try building a thing called the Confidence Boost. It's a $15 booster circuit and sounds pretty good too. It's good soldering practice.

The best advise is take your time and double check everything.

I have a few amps. There is the Weber forum that has a lot of helpful guys on it. Once you start there may be no turning back!!
