Yep, he's no slouch. Did he use his custom Ibanez JEM?

Yeah he's amazing and fun to watch too :D

Dang, Satriani has taught some great guitarist; Steve Vai, Kirk Hammett, etc

He's good, but he's not melodic. To me, he just seems like a bunch of light-speed notes that don't even match the song. Just my opinion.

+1 I agree 100%. Him and Jeff Beck are incredible guitarists. But the reason I think EC is the best is his songs sound so damn good.

Mike do you mean seen or actually heard him. Vai is as technically proficient on the guitar as you can get. Though I prefer Satch better as he writes incredible melodies. Vai's For the Love of God is the perfect composition to show what you can do with all that talent as it starts off with a beutiful but simple melody and slowly builds into an amazing display of 32 notes that are going by at such a blur but with them fitting perfectly, and not losing the structure of the solo. How someone can say there is no feeling in there it sure makes the hair on my arms stand up.

Oh I should have been more clear I didn't actually see him in person, I heard a video of him, I knew who he was I just had never thought to listen to him and WOW I know that he will now play a big factor in my guitar influences whenever I play

Okay, I will be the contrarian ... I could not disagree more with the "Vai is not melodic" vantage point. I think he is tremendously melodic. Further, the two albums he did with Roth in the the late '80s were two of the best albums of that decade by a long shot. To this day, those are still very listenable (especially Eat 'Em and Smile). Extremely melodic guy ... extremely. Just my opinion, though ...

He's my absolute favorite to watch. I think he has a lot of feeling in his music. Probably the most influential aspect of his approach to guitar playing that I get from him is he believes that a guitar should speak. I know there are a lot of people who have the opinion that he just plays a bunch of fast notes, but I don't hear his music like that at all.

Sure he has his moments where he displays some of his real technical tricks, but the are a lot of times where I feel like his guitar is telling a story. I also like how he instills humor in his playing style. His last tour was a really fun show to watch. It wasn't just a guitar clinic, he had a lot of fun with his other musicians as the show went on. It was like a party on stage.

I'm gonna have to say that it's admirable that Satch was a good teacher to Vai, but so many years later?? I think Vai has surpassed what those lessons might have been. I don't see Vai as being in anyone's shadow.

I love this video:

I think you get an interesting perspective on what how he approaches his writing.

There's no doubting his playing ability. His music and technique for me belongs in the eighties or nineties at best. All he's missing is spandex. Very outdated. This kind of shredding has had it's day. The hair blowing is ridiculous too.

Joe Bonamassa is the present and the future........

He's a shredder too, just in a different light.

One thing that can't be denied is that if you just randomly hear Steve Vai playing with no visual, you can recognize that it's him playing. Can't say the same for Joe Bonamassa.
