So, was cycling back from the gym today, going across a notorious roundabout in my area.

There are two lanes of traffic getting on at each entrance to the roundabout. In the lane closest to me the car stopped and waved me by, but just as as iwas half way across a big ford transit slammed into the side of me.

Dont really remember the smack, but remember opening my eyes and seeing the engine from the bottom!

Luckily i was wearing a helmet, or i wouldnt be typing this post. seriously, i would be toast.

After an xray i found that all i got was a badly road rashed shoulder and arm, and a bruised wrist. Was really afraid it would put me out of action on the guitar but doc says it will be ok in a week or so.

Still, too close of a call for my liking. Writing this to tell anyone here who cycles to WEAR YOUR HELMET!!! I would be dead had it not been for the helmet.

My poor bike didnt fare so well:

As my wrist is so sore, and it could have been so much worse, i think il take to wearing wrist braces when cycling from now on.

You would think this was a bad day for me, but, im alive, not badly injured and can warn others to wear a helmet so its a good day!

WOW! Glad to hear you made it through that. My personal opinion is to go get yourself checked out just to be safe!

That's scary!

In a past life, I was an EMT for my county, and it's scary how many times we saw folks (mainly kids) who were injured from bike accidents. Most of them were not bike vs. car, but simply falls, resulting in head injuries.

You should feel blessed that you live to play another day :-)

Cheers

Yikes.

Glad you are okay. I always were a helmet on my bike even though I feel stupid some times.

But hey. It's better to look stupid rather than dead, right?

I'm glad you're OK (and not as banged up as your bike is). I ride a bike to work and I would never consider riding without a helmet these days. I've been hit by cars twice now - fortunately no serious injuries though.

+1 for helmets. I've been saved by mine before.

Glad it wasn't any worse.

wow! you definitely have a story to tell and a public service announcement. keep that bike!

in elementary school we were taught to wear em but they look dorky. i think the extreme visual cues, like a demolished bicycle, xrays, pics of road rash, will definitely stick in kids' minds and make more people aware of the potential dangers!

Absolutely wear your helmet... and a stupid bright shirt too, the brighter the better. I spent last year in the UK and no one would think of getting out on the road without high-vis clothing. I'm an oddity here, but you're going to see me!

Glad you're alright schmintan,

And make sure to replace the one you were wearing in the accident, even if it looks okay. Once they've been hit, they're not safe.

This. Get ahold of the helmet maker...sometimes they like to have wrecked helmets back so they can study them, and occasionally they'll hook you up with a discount. Worth a shot, anyway.

Another +1 for bicycle (and motorcycle) helmets.

Wife is a surgical nurse and there is a long-term care-rehab facility near home. Seeing residents there is the raw material for nightmares.

Always be aware and as safe as possible out on the road...and the stairs.

WOW! From now, I am going to keep an eye on my kids - they always "forget" their helmets.

Glad that you were wearing your helmet schmintan and that although battle scarred OK. I have seen helmets with lights on them perhaps that will help in high traffic situations. Feel better soon Bro.
