I am sitting here listening to some of the music from my country, mostly old stuff, not only from Serbia, but from whole Yugoslavia, former Yugoslavia. I didn't listen some of those stuff for quite a while now, and wow man!!! We have some great jazz-(prog)rock-blues music here! So, I have decided to share it with you! Why not! You should know something more about us Eastern Europeans (from Balkan peninsula in this case). We do not only fight wars here, we play music between battles as well! Just kidding!
Well, guess what! This is the other side of Serbia, Croatia, Bosnia, Slovenia, Montenegro and Macedonia (six federal units of former Yugoslavia):

I'll post some of our music here on regular basis! You'll love it! Trust me!

Check this out!!!

"Leb i sol" is the name of the band in Macedonian ("Hleb i so" in Serbian, "Bread and salt" in English)! A legendary Yugoslavian jazz-rock band from Macedonia. With a new guitar player. The old guitar player was, in this part of the world, well known Vlatko Stefanovski.
It's actually an old folk Macedonian song, refreshed a bit! If this doesn't make you interested in music from the Balkans, nothing will!

More about the band: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leb_i_sol

Cool, for some reason I've always liked to listen to music in a language I don't speak.

Then you're in for a treat! It's not one language! It's Macedonian, Slovenian, Serbo-Croatian (politically devided into Serbian, Croatian, Bosnian and now Montenegrin I hear, which are all actually one language! Differences being like British English and American English. All just dialects basically!). So, three languages!

All about it here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Serbo_croatian

Time to share some of our culture here. Why not! You'll like it anyway!
It's...well...different!

Enjoy the music!

From Macedonia we are moving to Bosnia today! Sarajevo! Also known as the Yugoslav music capital! Because most of the influential rock bands from the '60s, '70s, '80s and early 90s (until 1992) came from Sarajevo.

Today, here's the tribute to one of my favourite bands from this part of the world! INDEXI!!!!!

Sadly, this is pretty much everything I could find on the band in English:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indexi

In early 2000s, the singer Davorin Popovic died and a couple of years later the guitarist Slobodan Boda Kovacevic died. Great musicians!!! In 1999 they released their last album and they played sold out arenas, venues and stadiums to support it. I can't find much of the videos of them actually on youtube.com, so here are couple of links from tribute concerts from a couple of years ago, played in all major cities of former Yugoslavia. There was a different singer for every song, and 90% of musicians on stage played in Indexi in one period of the band's life or another. The guitar player is also a new one. That is referring to concert videos which were called "Indexi i prijatelji" ("Indexi and friends" in English), but mp3 and concert videos from the '80s and from 1991 are actually studio versions of the songs and actual band.

Enjoy!

Bijelo Dugme (pronounced Biyelo Doogme, something like that)! White Button in English. Another rock band from Sarajevo. The most influential rock band in Yugoslavia and on the Balkans! The name came from the belief that at the time of the creation of the band (1974), everybody had at least one button on their cloths. It's a bit philosophical, meaning that everybody ought to have music that Bijelo Dugme played. The band leader and songwriter was Goran Bregovic (hey, we share the first name). The self-proclaimed "lazy guitar player". Even more when compared to today's standards. Meaning that he was mostly oriented to songwriting. He even said that he always made easy solos for him to play. Nevertheless, a very talented musician. Today, he's into some kind of Balkan beat music (which I personally don't like at all). The band lasted until 1989. They were also the leaders of Yugoslav sub-culture, the culture different from the one expected from young people in Socialist countries to create, which actually meant...the representatives of the Western culture in the East. But, Goran Bregovic created a different kind of rock music by combining our folk music with rock, and rock 'n' roll, thus creating a completely new and different sound of rock music.

More about the band: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bijelo_dugme

More about Goran Bregovic: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Goran_Bregovi%C4%87

The band broke up in 1989. and as they never formally broke up, in 2005. they played three sold out concerts in the three biggest Yugoslav cities Belgrade (now the capital of Serbia), Zagreb (now the capital of Croatia) and Sarajevo (now the capital of Bosnia). The concerts featured all three singers that were in the band during its lifetime, and most of the musicians that played in the band in its 15 years of existence. And musicians that play with Bregovic today. So a couple of songs are with some more folk essence than original studio recordings. Bregovic was a bit sloppy with some guitar parts in a couple of songs, he's more of an arranger today than a guitar player, so... But, it's great music.

You thought we had only three bands in Yugoslavia?! No! We had a lot more!
And today (already an evening here) we have a great pop-rock, rock 'n' roll band from Zagreb, now Croatia. It is called "Parni Valjak" ("Steamroller" in English). The singer Aki Rahimovski is a Macedonian, the guitarist Husein Hasanefendic called Hus is from Bosnia I believe, so it's another Yugoslav band. And a Croatian as well.
Founded in 1975, in 2005 they had a series of farewell concerts, but I read something about their reunion tour. Don't know if it's true. Anyway, they have a cult status in Croatia. In the '90s they went more into classic rock 'n' roll than ever before.

More about the band: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Parni_Valjak

Here's a small sample of their music:
