So I'm in my camp room last night Pearl Jamming when my pic chipped. Decided to keep on going anywho, see if I couldn't get some funky tones out of it but it ended up chipping more, ofcourse. It was stupid but I wasn't thinking to hard when I left my house and only brought 2 picks, one being extremely worn down and almost rounded off. I ended up grabbing a pair of scissors and carefully re-shaping the tip into something I'm comfortable with, it changed the feel a little bit because the pick ended up being a little shorter and therefor slightly less flexible. Anywho! The whole ordeal got me wondering how some of you guys have gotten by with very little, if you've constructed quick picks what did ou use? Did they work out well? Cool tones?
Have a good-one all!

Quarters give an interesting tone, but they are hard on the strings.

Haha yeah for sure! I've messed around with change here and there, they make for wicked pick slides on your gain channel. I tried a quarter out for the first time because I read somewhere that buzz osbourne dabbled in the quarter picks, definately pretty cool but you're right it does own strings and depending on how hard you're, "given er," youcould end up with a mighty fine slice in your guitars finish!

I had a toothpick in my mouth once while playing, so I decided to try and play with it. Since it's hard to find a good way to hold it without poking yourself, it's kind of impossible to alternate pick, or pick very quickly with it. The toothpick turned dark brown after playing for a few minutes so I decided it probably wasn't good for the strings, and I threw it away.

Credit cards, change, Ninendo DS cartridges, memory cards, 7.62 round(once), broke off power cord prong, all in the name of punk rock.

Learn to use your fingers. I have not used a pick in well over 2 years.

I learned to use fingerstyle becuase I figured it might come in handy in the future. I used it on a bunch of Dire Straits and Jeff Beck songs, but I started using a pick again and now I'm not very good at fingerstyle becuase I haven't played with the fingers in such a long time.

I carry a Brixton wallet with a pick-pocket in it. I keep two picks in there at all times, in case I'm ever in need of one. I have learned how to play finger-style though, so if I'm ever in a REALLY tight spot, I'm ready.

Hmm. Was going to post a link, but it seems they don't sell the wallet I have anymore.

Wow lol! There are some interesting ideas! As far as finger picking goes I'd have to work on a new style because I've lost part of a finger on my so called finger-picking hand haha. Filing the pick would have been a better idea, the scissors were rough, i might just shape em up a little with my nail clipper file haha, thanks for the tips and tricks guys!

I have been suitably impressed by your seemingly endless resourcefulness. Well done.

My own preference is my right hand. Giving fingerpicking a chance radically altered my guitar playing. I find Travis picking to be a monumental challenge, but straight fingerpicking is easy enough to pick up.

I am another one who used to use my Mothers old credit cards when I was young and would get 4 decent picks using the corners.
