Buddy Holly. He was only 22 when he died, and think of the huge impact he had in his brief career. I believe he would have been a major force, both in his own music and in fostering new acts that went undiscovered in our reality.

I read in a book that he was actually aware of something musically going on in England even back in the late '50s. How Buddy Holly would have impacted the British Invasion and the '60s in general had he been alive is almost unimaginable.

I would have loved to see Jimi playing Jazz. Also, don't forget Duane Allman, he was just 24 when he was in a motorcycle accident.

I don't mean this in a rude sort of way, it's just an honest question.
Why do people think Hendrix would have gone into jazz? To me it sounds like he was leaning in more of a funk/rock/soul direction when he died. He would have fit right into the '70s music scene. I could actually see SRV getting into jazz, but Hendrix not so much.

I'm new here, as of today, and when I saw this thread, my first thought was Stevie Ray Vaughn.

Welcome to the forum! You'll learn a lot if you stick around. And Stevie's a favorite on here. Probably my personal favorite too. :D

In the mid 70's anyways, but he would have taken many curves in his career, and would have gotten into heavy processing & synths at some point.

And then he'd come back to stuff.

He'd have been like Neil Young in that respect.

SRV: Playing in small town bars. ( don't hate me!)

That's probably more accurate than any of us would like to admit. It's scary how much talent is bottled up in small town bars while they let the likes of Lady Gaga run the show. Anyway, don't get me started on modern pop music.

everyone mentioned above. i'd say randy rhoads and dimebag.
randy, i thought, was just an amazing player.

others have touched on some of the other players, but with Dimebag(I always liked Diamond Darrell better than his later choice,) I think he may have had the most dramatic shift. Darrell is from the Abbott family, well known and respected in country circles, you can hear the influences in even his heaviest work. He worked very closely with Hank Williams the 3rd. hank 3 works in the old school country genre, alt country, and heavy metal worlds.

it seems to me that Damage Plan was the Abbott brothers almost hobby band. they were in it for fun as much as commercial venture, I think. i think Darrell had topped out, as far as his metal playing had gone. i could easily see him hitting the alt country circuit with Hank 3. maybe even settling down a bit as he got older, and writing an old school country(not the abomination that is commercial country,) album, maybe with Hank, and exploring his roots.

Cobain, I think could have been the punk rock star he always wished he was.

I think for certain In Utero would have been their last album. Cobain would have definitely left pop music, maytbe started a new band, maybe solo. But I think it would have been a very raw project. More importantly, I c think he would have fostered a lot of young bands and the alternative scene of the mi 90s could have looked different and maybe we would have avoided the crappy late 90s Limp Bizkits, Linkin Parks, PODs and such.

In a similar vein, Syd Barrett left Pink Floyd in 1968 at the beginning of the band's rise to fame. David Gilmore took his place. What would have happened had Barrett's mental condition not deteriorated? Would we have Dark Side of the Moon and The Wall? Just a thought.

That to me is a bit of a paradox. Without Syd there'd be no Floyd, but if Syd had stayed, there'd be no Floyd... at least as we know it. RIP Syd, and Rick

If Randy Rhodes had lived i'd hope he would have decided that flying was not his skill set. I don't know what it'd be like if he had lived... i like to think he would have kept the ridiculousness of the rock scene at bay (hair bands) and also kept Yngwie in his place.

RIP Randy, you were truly one of the greats.

You can also say that with Keith Moon and Led Zeppelin

Without Keith Moon they would be the New Yardbirds and with Keith Moon they would be the New Yardbirds

I'm confused... did Keith Moon spend any time in Led Zeppelin? I didn't know that.
