Eric Clapton in the Beatles song, "While My Guitar Gently Weeps."

Clapton is playing lead in that one, John is playing rhythm, and George is on Acoustic

When I think of it! the 3 piece band men because they have to be good at it. Billy Gibbons, Clapton when in Cream, Hendrix when alive, there could be quite a list.
Then there's the 4 piece with the vocalist that just does that. So bring out Pete Townshend, Paul Kossof and the list goes on there too.

Just joined a band that needed a rhythm guitarist. :) Don't mind it at all, I can work on my lead in my free time.

I would have to go with Keith Richards and James Hetfield too.

Caleb Followill from kings of leon does some nice rhythm stuff quite high up the fretboard, not so much with they're recent sex on fire era stuff though.

Also +1 on Pete Townshend.

The guys from the Funk Brothers.

The ones who did most of the Motown recordings? Everyone always forgets about them, but as a rhythm section, not necessarily jut the rhythm guitarist, they were SOLID!!!!

Izzy Stradlin isn't just my favourite rhythm player but he is my favourite guitarist ever hands down. You just have to listen to Surf Roach or Drove to hear why.

Strad's the man.

Adam Jones of Tool

There are some sick Rhythm patterns going on in their tunes. Odd times, time signature changes etc. Dude plays like a clock.

Seems everyone is glancing over my previous comment on the Funk Brothers.

How little motown we would have had without them, or at least good motown. Or the Muscle Shoals Swampers.

Keef and Malcolm.

Sometimes it's fun to approach the guitar as a percussion instrument, just adding the right accents.

Bob Wier -- perhaps not the greatest at the spot, but his style fit perfectly with what the Dead did.

I'm a huge fan of Joe Messina, of the Funk Brothers and his guitar!

He'd be in my top 3 with Steve Cropper and Leo Nocentelli (The Meters).
