Which do you reckons better? I mean, they're practically the same, but drop d gives you more of a black sabbathy kinda sound, like more, punch in the face sound you know what I mean? I like powerchords better, dunno why, but I guess putting one finger on say the 7th fret on E(d) and A, is just boring appproach.

young mr. riley, i like both. drop d is crazy heavy and i love it. for some reason, i come up with a million riffs out of drop d, probably cause of the simplicity you mentioned. but, i play in a classic rock band and we never drop and that's fine with me.
for example, when i play a C bar chord on the 3rd fret, i'll fret the G on the top string also and hit em all. make sense? probably not. it gives it a heavy sound without tuning the E string down. works up and down the neck. sorry i don't explain things well.
i love your enthusiasm as a young guitarist mr. riley. keep at it young man.

Riley,

You just have to find your niche. Personally I do not like playing Drop D. I mean you can use 1 finger to play. I guess that would be ok if I had an accident with a saw blade. But it makes me feel like I am cheating when I play that way.

When I started to learn to play, standard tuning was all I knew. Now I play better that way than with any alternative tunings. It's just a personal preference. Feel free to experiment. By the way, I play a mean Paranoid and Warpig with standard tuning.

+1

I only use drop D with full chords so I can get an extra low note or something similar.
I only use drop d on songs that require a power chord 2 frets lower than 0, if tha makes sense

A good ear exercise is try and drop the E to D and back on the fly till you can nail it, that way you can drop down and back in a flash without a tuner. You will catch a lot of guys doing this just for an effect. Riley some songs like one of your faves Heart Shaped Box calls for you to drop the E to D, but like most I feel it to be a simple way to play though it does have its use.
