I have a Russian Big Muff Pi., the one built like a T-34. When used with a good Fuzz face reissue you get a genuine Hendrix 'Purple Haze' sound. There are different issues of the Muff Pi. The early ones have the most famous sound, and sound different than the 70's ones (which have a smooth creamy compressed tone). I dont know about the new production ones, but some of the clones of the expensive original early EH muffs do sound very good and authentic IMO.
As far as the Swollen pickle; I love it...the reissue pedal that is.
To me nothing captures the sound of very late 60's and early 70's cheesy B flick sountrack fuzzed out guitar music and also 70's XXX guitar jams ( er..so I'm told) than the Way Huge reish!
The answer then, is both!..but not at the same time.

Im looking for a Russian Muff to add to my muff collection. Many tell me that they are brighter sounding than their American counterparts. Is this true?

Not having heard an American muff, and I guess you mean a new production, I can't say for certain, however I don't notice any really spikey treble out of my Russian Muff. Its been awhile since I've used it, I only use it once in awhile together with my Fuzz Face, for a Hendrix tone .

Man, I should of bought a Russian Muff when they were still available a few years back. I remember guitar center was selling them for about $50.00. From the videos, the Russian Muff seems much smoother and creamy sounding than the current American Muff which seems rougher.
