Hi guys,

For those of you that read my post earlier in the week regarding Jeff Beck's performance of his rendition of 'Over The Rainbow' on the Jools Holland show;

I was just watching the extended version of the program (for those that didn't know, there is a half hour, cut down episode earlier in the week and then the full hour long show is played a little later in the week), and this time, it (Over The Rainbow) was played perfectly and there was no banging of the head after the performance?

How strange, do you suspect he demanded to re-record the piece?

Russ :?

Hi Russ: I was out so have it waiting on the recorder from last night. Now I'm itching to give it a watch and find out about it! A thickening plot - and of course we have Tuesday's broadcast safe on YouTube to compare:

Now I'm off to the TV to see if that's different than what went out yesterday...

Later - C

[Ten minutes later] Hi again: yep, it's a different take. How fascinating - and how impressive that he has the clout to get the program producer to allow him another run at it!

The differences are real - but small. Cleaner picking, and he didn't have that moment of indecision I fancy I spotted at 1.36 in the first take (in the link above). If we were in the control room on the recording we'd choose take two, for sure - but there's not so very much in it, is there?

His disgust with himself after the first take just shows what a perfectionist he is, for which I have great respect. I'd have been so proud of the take he rejected!

Nobody seems to have put the new version up on YouTube yet, but as soon as I find it there I'll link to both versions so's people can make their own judgement.

Very interesting, Russ: thank you! :D

BTW: I've only listened to her first number so far, but did you think Alicia Keys was flat on just about every note, most conspicuously the high ones? And no take two opportunity for her, it seems!

...Just while we're ripping to shreds the performances of people vastly more talented than ourselves (well myself, anyhow)...

Cheers - C

Interesting indeed!

I wonder if they just swapped out the audio track...well, I guess not if they didn't show his anguish after the tune.

The biggest mistake that I heard was the "bad" note at 0:49-0:50.

I read somewhere that Jeff and Jools have been friends since his late 90's appearance.

"Jeff's 'mistakes' sometime sound better than other's guitar playing."

Love the comments on the YouTube vids!!!

I don't know that I like someone demanding a second take. Regardless of who it is. It went out on tv, you played it, it's your art. Yeah, you can want it to be better, but it's too late.

I don't get a second chance on stage at gigs, I can't go "Wait, I messed up that note, let's start over...." Why should you, someone who is much more talented than me, get a second chance on tv?

In the studio I can understand, as you want your best face out there on the album, but a live performance (regardless of if it's recorded to be played later or not) should be just that, live.
