Do you come from a long line of musicians in your family? Does your family tree have a few musicians on it? Where do you get your musical genes from?
In my family, my Mom plays piano, as well as my Mom's sister, one Brother on my Mom's side had played guitar for years, and another of her Uncles used to build amps and collect guitars.
My interest to start playing guitar came from some neighbors of ours that played guitar. When I was a little kid they would show me chords on a guitar until I got my own.

I'm the only one. My father had a lot of art supplies, but never used them.

They say it's a tragedy for a man to die with his music still in him. I don't want to go out like that.

There are a few people who play guitar in my family but none as serious about it as I am. My Dad could play one or two songs like "House Of The Rising Sun", he was the one who showed me chords. I have two uncles that play acoustic guitar pretty well, they played and sang old Irish/folk songs when they're having a few drinks.

My grandfather was a singer (read 'crooner') back in the 20's and 30's, an uncle played saxophone and other woodwinds. My mother played piano and sang. All were self taught and I am too.

My tale is a sad one... no just kidding.

My grandfather played Sax, his brother was in a Jazz band in the 30s but i never met him... when i was alive not in the 30s. My mother played violin. I grew up in a family of 6 kids and we all had to pick an instrument, since i wasn't allowed to pick drums because my father didn't want all the banging... funny since there were six kids... nevermind. I picked Trumpet because i loved Chuck Mangione growing up. I always wanted to learn Guitar because of all the Simon and Garfunkel and Elvis 8 Track cassettes in the house but didn't know how to tune the acoustic we had in the house so got discouraged. Around middle school i decided to leave the Highland band i was in at school and take up guitar. I'm self taught because i'm very self conscious about my playing which in hindsight was a terrible mistake. I wish i would have taken lessons from a really good rock player to help me with leads because i feel that's my biggest weak point.

What a boring story that was.

I hope at least one of my daughters takes up an instrument of some kind so i have someone to jam with.

I remember the family getting a bit of a shock in church one day, the organ player called in sick. A request was made for another player, my dad got up and filled in. Even my mom didn't know he could play, I never heard him play again. Same with three of my brothers, they can all play guitar very well. But none of them do :? two of them are great artist's too, yet never pick up a pencil or brush.

Both my grandfathers played the fiddle and all of my immediate family play some sort of instrument. Here is a list.
Oldest son-- Drums ( semi- pro) local bands
Youngest son-- Guitar and Bass(mostly)
Daughter--- Guitar
Sister-- Drummer( good one too)
Brother-in-law---Guitar
Oldest grandson---guitar
Second to oldest grandson--Drums and some guitar
Two of my granddaughters-- piano lessons (age 5 and 7)
two other grandchildren too young but always grabbing any instruments left unguarded!!

You would think we had the makings of a decent band but only get together at family functions several time a year!!!

My dad can play the guitar, mostly acoustic. I remember staying up late while he would play Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin tunes on it while I was young.

My parents play a little bit. My Mom couple play a few CCR song in the 60's/70's until her brothers smashed her guitar. One of those brothers ended up playing guitar at a decent level, but he only plays in his bedroom. I have another distant uncle who played guitar and a distant cousin who plays country guitar at a professional level with some heavy weight musicians up in Austin.

On my Dad's side of the family the only professional musician is my grandfather. He played drums in a western swing band in the 50's, and he still plays with his band in west Texas today. My Dad took up bass again about seven years ago. He played a little bit in high school. Now he plays in several praise and worship bands and I play with him. I just need to get him to quit relying on the sheet music so we can play some blues. :)

My dad can play every instrument on planet earth. He mostly plays drums, but he is a great guitar and bass player too.

My sister plays piano for school and church. She also plays saxophone in our school band. She has an amazing musical ear.

My mum played flute in high school. She is a good flute player, but I get most of my musical ability from my dad's side.

My grandpa tuned pianos for a living, so you can assume he knows how to play them.

I have four uncles who can play guitar, and another one who plays the drums in a country music band.

My cousin plays drums, guitar, and possibly more instruments, but I don't know him very well. I have another cousin who is also a drummer.

And I play guitar.

This isn't all my music playing relatives, just the ones of the top of my head.

I'm the only one in my family other than a great uncle of mine who lives in newfound land. I've only met him once or twice but plays guitar and accordian and has a cd out (localy). he usualy plays cool Newfoundland folk tunes and stuff. My grandfather on the opposite side of my uncle loves classical music and I'm pretty sure at one time he played piano. Sort of a guy who wanted to play music was never able to.

When grow up and start a family I'm defenetly going to do whatever I can to pass on music! I sure wish more of my family members played music.
