Did anyone else see Jeff Beck's appearance on the Jools Holland show last night in which he played his rendition of 'Somewhere Over The Rainbow' from his latest album?

If so, what did you think?

Well, to be honest, no not really!

I knew that he had done it on his new album and I was expecting it to be fantastic, but I actually thought it was rather poor and un polished.

See what you think?

First time I've heard Jeff Beck play that, got to say I was mesmerized by it, then again I've seen him other times and been blown away, dunting his forehead at the end sort of gave it away he wasn't best pleased himself though eh !!, maybe it was his tailor let him down yet again

There were elements of it that I thought were very skillful, such as his usual, playing parts of the melody using only the tremolo, but for me, on the whole, it didn't really meet my expectations of what it could have been.

Anyway that is just my opinion, but then again, who the hell am I to comment on the work of such a legend eh?

Yes, I too thought him banging his head at the end of the performance was kind of an odd way to finish?

As you say, maybe he wasn't too pleased with it either?

My wife and I have tix to see him in June, should be a great show from the reviews that I've heard.

We saw him last year with the "Ronnie Scott" band.

You have the right to comment and give your honest opinion Tube Screamer. I haven't seen this yet, I'll take a look when I can.
Truthfully speaking, I'm beginning to find JB's sound a bit un-guitar like and irritating. I've heard parts of the new album and haven't bothered buying it. It might grow on me sometime but like I've said, the sound is starting to grate in my head and I was once his biggest fan.
He probably still plays some nice passages though.
Anyway I'll see it when I get around to it.

Hope it's a great show for you and your wife Mike, going to have to educate my wife a bit more though, ABBA fan, says it all, and my guitar's called a stratosfarter

No, it's nothing at all like that. That is awsome!

I actually think Jeff Beck is a fantastic guitarist, I just thought his preformance on the Jools Holland show was rather poor for a guitarist of his calibre!

Well, for a guy that's turning 66 years old in less than a month...I give him props for just still being able to do what he does.

But as Ceri mentioned, the hair dye is too obvious!

Here we are peeps, this is the number Tube Screamer is talking about:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M0FT7FO5Xe8

I thought I was hearing some fluffed notes as he went along, and at the end the multiple forehead slaps says Jeff heard 'em too!

This was Tuesday's half hour "Jools Holland Live" broadcast. On Friday we get the hour long recorded version of the show with more numbers by each band. So I'm interested to see what other number/s Jeff did and if he pulled himself together and nailed it/them - or if he was just having a bad night!

***

Anyway. Jeff Beck and Paul McCartney: fascinating to see that two gentlemen who have so much spare cash to spend on hair surgery don't need to. Apparently...

Cheers - C

I thought the performance was ok actually. It's just something about the sound, maybe it's me going through a phase, I don't know.
