From a discussion on the subject of the gear carnage :

"The facilities are unlike what most of us are accustomed to. Nashville has tons of these rental rehearsal type facilities around. They are like the storage units you see all over, except they have AC power, lights, AC and heat. The storage/practice facilities are usually in gated areas that require passwords punched in to get through the gate. A friend of mine in Nashville was in a band that rehearsed in one of these many years ago.

The storage/rehearsal facilities are basically metal buildings, with a standard door and a garage door to each unit. Bands set up to rehearse and leave their equipment there between rehearsals. They are only one story.

Because of the nature of the buildings and business, they are set up in industrial or commercial zones, which in Nashville are often close to the river.

Insurance estimates the likelihood of flooding. The type of flooding that occurred in Nashville is estimated to occur once every 500 years. This was that year. It was deemed very highly unlikely.

The water that soaked all this equipment was loaded with diesel fuel. Imagine what the diesel would do to wood. As stated, glue dissolved, finishes bubbled off. Once dry, the diesel is still in the wood, making refinishing and repair difficult. Imagine diesel fuel soaked into transformers in amps, not to mention the cabinets, circuit boards, etc.

Would even the fibre eyelet boards in a vintage Fender amp survive a soaking in diesel fuel? Water is one thing. Truck fuel is another.

The logistics of trying to clear out hundreds upon hundreds of storage facilities during a flash flood that arose within hours and continued would have been impossible. It happened, and could not be stopped or avoided.

Obviously this type of storage facility has to be re-thought, and if Soundcheck continues should be moved to higher ground.

This is the issue of building on flood plains every time a town or city floods.

In this case, no one expected this level of flooding. It may be 500 years before the next one. Or it may be next month."

What is the insurance factor in all of this? Were the collections valuable enough to the artists to get the full coverage package? Do the insurance companies see these guitars and amps and artifacts as "valuable vintage" or just some old stuff thats not worth more than what they paid for it?

Good question and I'm sure it's the topic of much discussion down there. Just a quick google brings up a lot more info, such as this one :

This was a double whammy for Joe Chambers and the Musician's Hall of Fame. The only reason all of that equipment was being stored was because he lost a lawsuit against the city - who appropriated his property where the Hall was located to tear it down to build a Convention Center that no one wants....
