Well, I'm thinking with all of the hoopla concerning rosewood, plus price hikes with Fender, I'm thinking maple might get more attention. Personally, I really don't have a tremendous preference. My Squier Tele Custom has a maple board, and my Squier Jazz and Precision Basses have rosewood, and all are good for me, at least.

I'm going with Maple. Maple has always been my favorite boards on Fender basses.

I'm going to go on record as preferring Ginger over MaryAnne. MaryAnne was certainly cute and had a girl-next-door sweetness about her but she wasn't in the same league as Ginger. Even SHE knew that.

I will also commit to preferring Chevy trucks over Ford and coffee over tea, bacon over sausage, poached before scrambled, brown toast before white, rib steak over t-bone and Marjorie over Sansa.

All of those preferences are "across the board".
There are no exceptions due to particular circumstance.

I couldn't say the same about rosewood and maple.
It depends on a few things.

Counting my guitars and basses, it turns out I have more rosewood than maple. I don't know if that constitutes a preference or not as the board isn't usually the biggest component in my decision making process when choosing a new guitar.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

There appears to be more rosewood than maple hanging in the shops around here. That goes for the expensive axes as well as the cheap Costco, Best Buy, and Walmart ones. So I wouldn't say price or rarity is a concern as far as necks go. Maybe, someone could verify that some time back in the 60s (for a brief time) maple Fender fretboards came at a premium because rosewood was so prevalent, and who knows if lesser quality was covered by that dark wood?

I remember playing the '62 Strat Brazilian rosewood like it was yesterday. My 12 stringer wouldn't have seemed right with a maple neck for some reason. Just not folkish enough, and it didn't look cool with a mouth harp (well, that's as good an excuse as any). Not the same wood today. I have custom Honduran mahogany kitchen cabinets and matching alterations that were next to impossible. For today's rosewoods (and mahoganys) for comparison, as they used to say, "Nice, but no cookies". As far as guitar bodies are concerned I would definitely buy today's rosewood if it spoke to me; but, I wouldn't bend over backwards for it.

I guess I'm weird, and because car colours are often the body Fender gives us, my mind says would a dark brown interior look good? If not, the rosewood is out and the lighter neck comes into play. Weird, huh?

I have ebony and maple. Here's the thing. My first guitar (hand me down) was a jumbo all maple acoustic with pearl buttons. I don't remember the name, and I was asked by a more knowledgable individual if it was a Gibson. I didn't pay attention at that age. Crazy me. Where music surrounded me at that time, and where mahogany and Country music (Hank Snow country) was common, who knows? It could have been. I only know that I wish I had it today.

As for tone wood, with all the effects and post production available today, although relevant to electrics, I think this rosewood maple choice is more important with acoustics.

All that aside - I'm going to a Brad Paisley concert tonight. I'll count the rosewood versus maple. :P FSB

Yes, he did, as the others did too, Mike. Almost all were maple for this event.

He played Teles (for the most part), and I could tell he was using a Bender. To most it would be a B Bender, but I saw this video (with rosewood) where he said he liked to bend up and down with a G Bender, and he does it well. The Bender gives him the pedal steel guitar sound he wanted, similar to the trem, but not quite the same with his picking/strumming during the bend if that makes any sense.

He also used a Strat and an acoustic.

The beauty is that he plays solo a lot in his songs so that's a treat. :D

Due to recent CITES laws Fender limited the use of rosewood on certain models. Only the MIA Professional, Artist, Custom and Vintage Reissue series will continue offering rosewood as an alternative to maple. MIMs now feature pau ferro fretboards and the MIA Elites will got ebony this autumn.

There's no surprise about ebony boards on the MIA Elites, this material was already offered on many high-end Fenders since 1983.

I move to nominate 'Chromeface" as the official Forum Archivist. 8) The stuff he has hidden in his closet never ceases to amaze me.

Thanks for the rundown of the various models and their fretboard material, Chromeface. :D

Fender used pau ferro fingerboards for their 5-string basses from 1990 to 2006.

Thanks, Mike. Nice to have a date with my better half. :D
As for the B-Bender it looks like Fender has one model listed as (2000-2015). The Nashville B-Bender was introduced in 1996. In the years1998 and 2000 major changes were made.

The B-Bender was not invented by Fender, and other designs and guitars have been available as have been retro fits.

I found this an interesting read:

Cheers!

Here's the rosewood vs maple connection: The inventor of the B-Bender was also a drummer. He used sticks. Sticks come in maple and rarely rosewood. The tone is questionable, but (aside from other material) the durability and value goes to maple in this case. :P

Marty Stuart. Great post, Mike. Thanks!

I wouldn't mind trying one of those benders, but I'm gun shy to buying one. Still, it would a be cool addition. Not sure if it would be maple or rosewood.
