Big stuff, JPD. Best wishes.

One of our daughters is also getting married this year. To quote those great 20th century American philosophers, Sonny and Cher...

"...and the beat goes on."

Tradition is Father of the Bride picks up the cost. Grooms parents the the rehearsal meal.

Congrats!

I have a friend/co-worker with two daughters and naturally concerned about the costs. So one day I said "here's what you do. Each night after they're asleep, plant a small tape recorder next to their heads. The tape will repeat just one word over and over -- ELOPE!" I had two other friends (both in their late 30s, first marriage for him, 2nd for her) and I got the idea from them.

They watched the guest list and cost of their wedding spiral up and up as time went along. Then one weekend, everyone was wondering "where'd Lori and Tony go?" Well we found out -- New Mexico -- total wedding cost, $138. That's the way to do it they said and we were all dying. Granted, some of those who expected to be guests didn't think it was so funny but hey, not their wedding.

Well, finally one of my first friend's daughters did get married ... nice wedding, etc. And she said they were very frugal, very cost conscious but not cheap. Both were late 20-something professionals so they split the cost with only a little assistance from the respective parents.

Okay, I said, how much is a frugal wedding these days? She said they spent around $38,000. Eeep, I said, that's more than my first five cars cost all together.

Mine is 20 now and he is taking online courses and currently making over 30 plus a year so he is not to expensive now. Other then food that is. I keep thinking I should charge him rent but just happy he pay his bills. His girlfriend that lived here for a year plus when he was 18 has moved on ( she was 24 wanted commitment) and he is back to the frequent flyers. Don't think he is committing to one any time soon.
