I took Nevin1985's comment as humourous... a quick word play of stradivarius and stratocaster

Google the "Suzuki" method. It works better with personal instruction, but even on your own, its a good place to start. I played violin for 15 years, its an easy intrument to learn, but tough to master!

Best of luck!

Practice.
I played the viola in High School, and violin more recently.
Have fun learning. It is a cool instrument.

Hi hoot33, welcome to the Forum.

Not in the slightest saying this doesn't belong here - all in favor of diverse discussion. But just in case it helps, there are violin forums out there too. For example:

http://www.fiddleforum.com/fiddleforum/ ... tion=forum

and

http://www.violins.ca/forums/

and

http://www.atelierviolins.com/forum/index.php

That last one not only has lots of different sections on things like jazz violin and Irish fiddle and bluegrass - but boards about wine, TV and wildlife too. Man, that's almost everything that fiddle players are into!

Good luck - C

Welcome Hoot33.

Occasionally someone here will take up something in addition to guitar and talk about it.

'Does us all good to hear about something other than the endless Strat vs Les Paul debates.

I too played the violin for a while... Great instrument ! I took lessons from some dude that played for the Baltimore Symphony.. that is how I got good so quickly... He taught me a lot about how to correctly hold the bow and instrument and other great technique...

Welcome to the Forum hoot33! Ceri's post should help, I sold my violin 25 years ago, took lessons for about a year thinking I would incorporate it into my act (solo at the time) it didn't happen the way I thought but hung onto it for a long time before I sold it.

Another vote for the Suzuki method, particularly if you have no access to a teacher. And needing one or not depends on how far you plan to go with violin. For classical and/or a career as a classical violinist, there are certain techniques, styles, etc. you'd have to master. I doubt you'd ever hit on any of this through self study.

But if you're playing for enjoyment and to play recognizable tunes, you can learn without a lot of tutoring.

As for adapting technique to guitar, maybe not directly. But scales are scales, melody lines are melody lines ... and so on ... all the music and theory you learn will apply.

Be patient - a year will go by very quickly. Anything worthwhile will take serious effort and time. On the other hand, if you are an expert within a year can you please teach me? :D
