Ha!Ha! Very funny, Twelvebar.
Not!
I keel you!
Seriously, though I can read a (very) little, and not fluently.
What's that old story?
Interviewer to old blues man - "Can you read music?"
Old blues man - "Not enough to hurt my playing."

Exuent..

I'd say I can read enough to get by as well. I learned to read treble clef when I was 6 years old and i'm very fluent with that. That being said other then playing guitars for fun I have never seriously played any instrument that was not a bass instrument! I've played bass guitar, baritone and tuba but have never really learned how to read bass clef! Oh well just a litle weird on my part :)

CajunBlues, why do you ask? A survey or a school paper?

I don't want to come off gruff or egotistical here but to me, reading notes is like reading written words. Stumbling, stuttering and incorrectly reciting in either case is surely not reading. To my way of thinking, one either can read or one can't. I took the time and effort and thankfully, I can. YMMV.

I can read both the treble and bass clefts, favoring the teble cleft because I forced myself to learn it more than the bass one. I usally stumble into it when I begin and then pick up steam and then I'm fine.

I've played in several jazz situations and a symphony orchestra (double bass) in addition to most genres of popular and rock music. I've read Stravinsky and hand-written lead sheets from jazz players, but 90% of what I play these days is improvised. I will say that being able to read makes the scope of my improvisation more connected in my brain, but it's not something necessary for all musicians. Certainly the Beatles did pretty well without it.

No, I am presently learning how to read bass music. For me it seems quite a bit easier than reading on the guitar... But only time will tell how good I become at it... I am beginning to lose my passion for the 6 string... For reasons I would rather keep to myself...

Great suggestion... I never thought of that .... Since I am pretty good at reading tab on the guitar, switching to bass should be pretty transparent... But not so with reading from the bass clef...

How do you get a guitar player to turn down?
Put sheet music in front of him/her.

Good one... I am one of the few 6 stringers that can read... But not as good as most bass players...
